Dog aggression is one dog behavior that is so often misinterpreted. Some see a barking dog when they passes by someone’s home and they think “That dog is really mean” or “That dog is vicious”. The dog could be just guarding the house which he see as his territory.

There are many causes of aggression, the common ones being..:

1) Dog aggression can be caused by a medical problem which is affecting a dog's behavior due to a hormone imbalance, irritability, fever or other causes.

2)Fear due to under socializing - This is type of aggression occurs when a dog feels insecure or frightened (lack of socializing)

3)Fear due to bad experience/abuse. It occur when a dog has been given severe punishment.
Fear-motivated aggression is a defensive reaction and occurs when a dog believes he is in danger of being harmed.

4) Territorial aggression, protective aggression, and possessive aggression are all closely related aggressive traits are based in a defense of a resource. Territorial aggression is about the dog protecting his “area”

5) Dominance Aggression almost always delivered towards people/animal that the dog perceive as below his pack hierarchy. Potential dominant aggression dog can be “started” over subtle things such as letting a dog demanding you to give him affection or ignoring commands to get off his sleeping area or not allowing you to remove objects that it has grab in it‘s mouth. Dominance aggression progresses in stages because the owner may not have the understanding or the experience to nip it in the bud.

6) Early training to prevent aggression is important.
Subject: More Update on Kittens and Mother Cat
Posted: Mon Jun 30, 2008 3:39 pm (GMT 8)

Hi All

I took the female siamese and her ktitens to a vet yesterday for checkup.

Overall, the kittens are healthy. Good skin and fur, sound limbs. Very alert and active.

The vet estimated their age (from checking their teeth)
a) Male kitten slightly around 3 months old
b) Female kitten is around 4 months old.
c) Mother cat (siamese) is young, maybe 1 year of age and probably her first pregnancy.

We (including the vet) think that the mother cat might have fostered or adopted the male kitten as it is seldom and unlikely a female cat giver birth to her kittens in separate bathces of 1 month apart.

In any case, the mother cat is also in healthy condition, except for a bit of slight fur loss which the vet attributed to stress-related.

I had the vet dewormed them.

There's a potential adopter for the female kitten. so only left the mother cat and her male kitten.

We have tentatively named them as follows :
a) Samantha - mother cat - gentle, calm, loving and steadfast, also very intelligent

b) Chloe - female kitten - friendly, loving, gentle and steadfast (she's like her mother)

c) Benjamin - male kitten - playful and friendly, adorable, active (loves to play all day)

Potential adopter pls contact me at this forum or PM me.
do c heckup within 2 weeks before you send her for boarding. make sure all vaccinations are updated and also your dog should be on tick prevention just in case. Visit the boarding place with your dog to let her familiarise herself and check out the place yourself to make sure all is fine for your dog.
Subject: Canine Ehrlichiosis
Posted: Sat Jun 28, 2008 1:00 pm (GMT 8)

My furkid, Boby is around 10mths+ has been diagnosed wit ehrlichiosis after I send him to vet to do blood test. He was actually in a low mood and his appetite was reducing alot until the extend he din touch his food at all for around 2weeks. At 1st i tot he was actually trying his luck so that I wil giv other choice of food but the condition change from bad to worst. But then he was not being himself and wil just sleeping or lying even when me and his daddy is around. I was getting worried until I brought him to the vet for further check up. Well, from our eyes he is just a healthy and problem free kid to us but after the vet did the check on him, actually there was something big like a ball inside his body either in his stomach or spleen or kidney Boby was having fever and lost weight, now at 15kg onli

So after the consultation, the vet actually recommended me to do blood test ie PBF, FBC & Bllod Biochemistry as Boby had actually got ticks during his first month b4 i took him back. The blood result shows that Boby's blood platelet count is 23 onli if compared to normal of 200+ The vet said this is quite critical from the results obtained.

From my research, ehrlichiosis actually caused by brown ticks. I was told that the high possibility reason that trigger tis sickness to attack was high stressed (mainly because I move house and in current place around 1 month+) from what the vet advice.

For now, the prescribed medicine is doxycilin 100mg for Boby, 2 tablets a day for consequtive 21 days and Vibee for 10days. I was told to keep an eye on Boby for symptoms of any bleeding in his pee/poo, eyes, nose and his skin.

Any advice on wat I should do except on the above and is there any way i can help to reduce Boby's stress? Are there any reason except stress which can trigger again the disease?

Thank you.
dear kate, as i didnt examine your loved one, i am afraid i am unable to comment in depth into your case. nonetheless, in regards to some of your queries, the study of the growth is done via a sample taken of the growth and sent to a specialist who will then study the growth and give you a report on what he has seen and done. depending on the quality and correct sampling method of the growth, your veterinarian or the specialist will be able to give you a rough estimate or prognosis of your beloveds' condition.

the option of surgery, cure rates, recurrence rates, chemotheraphy, pain relief or other options very much depend on your communication with your vet, as he/she may be the best person who understands the condition of your beloved. if however, he/she thinks that a second opinion from a veterinary oncologist is needed, he/she will recommend you to one (if available).

i strongly urge you to have a chat with your vet and i believe your communication with your vet is probably the most important factor is helping your beloved!

From what I read here, there could be a few factors or causes for that dog's aggression, here's what I think
1. The dog is socialised with humans but not with other dogs - therefore there is an aggression towards dogs.
2. Not being castrated may have provoked more dog-dog aggression. Castrating him at a later stage may help, but most probably not much
3. Being tied up most of the time does lead a dog to be very protective of its area, and therefore, more aggressive (especially towards strangers, or strange dogs).
4. In a dog fight, if you try to separate the dogs, you will get bitten (although the dog is generally friendly towards people).

However, I'm not a dog trainer/behaviourist, so please get some input from the others before deciding on any conclusions. Oh yeah, behaviour is such a subjective subject - so your story or your friends point of view may differ from the actual behaviour of the dog.

The only way your friend's dog will get confiscated (and maybe euthanised), is IF the dog-bite victim lodges a police report, and the police/judge deemed your dog to be unsafe for society. Not many of those cases happened in Malaysia, so dont worry too much. Talk to the guy who got bitten, and see if he already lodged a police report.

Also, if we do not apply by writing the article, how else can we get in? Why does only one manuscript is needed, although many can apply? Is only one to be selected for the free course? What about people who are willing to pay? How about vets from developed countries?
Subject: Re: Dun Simply SEnd ur PET to SPCA
Posted: Fri Jun 27, 2008 2:50 pm (GMT 8)

rehohk wrote:

i found this statemen in other forum...so,better u give ur pet to pet lover rather then give it to SPCA..they just wanna make money..adoption fee will cost bot 300 and above..i will paste the statement below...

A story to share,
Last Saturday i terjumpa sepasang anak kucing kat tepi jalan. I kesian i ambil and bring them to vet. The Dr inform me that kitten ada sakit mata. So the Dr beri vaksin and ubat cacing to them. Since i already have 2 cat at home, I cannot effort to adopt two more kitten. So, I bring them to SPCA Ampang hopefully mereka mendapat jagaan terbaik di sana. Tetapi apa yg memeranjat kan I, semasa i hantar that kitten at SPCA, two of management people kat SPCA tu kata nak bagi injection mati or " put them sleep" atas alasan kucing dah banyak dan kucing tu sakit. Sedangkan I tengok kucing2 kat situ semuanyer yang sama jer dari dulu. Takder pun kucing2 baru everyday. I punya sakit hati dgn statement diorang sampai terpaksa argue dgn management kat situ. I tak sampai hati so i bring them home. Luckly my sepupu nak adopt them.

Persoalan sekarang,
Adakah SPCA tu hanya tempat utk kucing yang cantik2 such as DLH and persian and also sihat2 sahaja?
If the answer is yes, no wonder lah adoption fee kat situ pun achive more then RM300. So charity money tu diorang wat apa sebenarnya?

As a conclusion boleh lah i katakan bahawa SPCA tu bukanlah 100% tempat perlindungan kucing tetapi profit oriented organisation lah kan?

Can someone please give an explanation on this?
_____________________________________________________

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hmmm.... I am rather suprised that your SPCA works in the same fashion as the one in Singapore. Any cats brought to our SPCA would be culled if they found the animal with the slightest ailments. Its very sad, they do not give a chance to the animal to be treated or recover. Reason being there are tooo many cats and no space in the SPCA. The staff at our SPCA say its a better to put them to sleep so that they wont suffer in the streets, that is why the name Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. What are a sad irony

I wished our SPCA was like the one in US, "ASPCA". They save all animals and there is a stict law on animal abusers and they even have Law enforcers for animals. All animal abusers go thru an animal programme while in prison and are educated abt the animal and they have to work with the species of the animal they have abused. How cool!

Dr Nat is absolutely right. I rescue animals too. Although I have never put any of my healthy rescued dogs to sleep, but I do no disagree with what SPCA is doing.

If you think SPCA is making money then you are very wrong. I rehome pedigrees for not less than RM200 adoption fees. And do you think I only spend RM200 for the dog in its entire care in my place? Try rescuing just one dog from the streets and see how much you spend. I recently rehome a shih tzu for rm350 and if you think i am making money then you are very wrong I have spent in total not less than RM1000 for the dog that RM350 is nothing.. Food, medication and grooming all needs money not to mention my time..

Give it to dog/cat lovers. That's good but why own a pet in the first place when you are not prepared to keep it for the next 10 plus years? Many opt to give to private rescue organisations and also to individuals like me but to be realistic how many can one take? Me for example am at my limit now. Adoption is moving slow what other options do I have other than to keep the dog and be patient? Most dog lovers has already got at least 1 dog not to mention those that have above 3 dogs.. I don't have an option to put them to sleep as I promise myself to keep them till their dying days which is a huge commitment on my side.

When owners want to give up their pets but claim they love them to death I don't really believe them. True there might be some genuine cases where there is totally no option but i always believe there is a way out. So to me those that choose to give up their own pets and also to those that want to rescue a dog/cat and then give to SPCA i would just say you will have totally no say in it. If you want a say in the future of the animal then do it YOURSELF or keep it YOURSELF..

nonetheless, if complete spleen removal surgery is done do make sure the growth hasnt spread and if all goes well, your dog does not suffer a blood loss crisis in the future as the spleen stores the excess blood in the system!

do insist that a study of the growth is done to determine the type of growth as it is only then, your veterinarian can give you a better idea of the chances of recurrence, cure rates and recommend chemotheraphy if need be!

Dr HanMRCVS:

Thank you so much for your reply. Does that mean if we don't remove the spleen, the dog will suffer the pain more when it collapse than chemotheaphy? will he pass away slowly and painfully? All we want now is to have a bit more time with him but without giving him too much pain or suffering, and also, how does the study of growth is done? can that be determine how much longer will the dog live?
I will be really appreciated to hear some reply from you, Thank you

Cute Kitten No.3: 2nd most obedient, always feels like want to join No.1 to play....but i feel its got devil and angel by its ears...so

Dear All:

My dog is 9 years turning 10 this September, He collapsed suddenly 2 days ago, we took him to see the vet and after ultrasound, we were told he has spleen cancer, and surgery chance is 50%/50%, he stayed in the hospital for 1 day, and so far he has not collapsed for more than 36 hours. We really want second opinion on the spleen cancer, especially for those who has experienced the situation before or taking care of the spleen cancer dogs before, It is really pain to see him lying there, tired all day. We don't know how to make him more comfortable, we don't know how long he can live if without removing the splenic masses, we don't know what to do when there is another collapse. If anyone know anything or knowing some vets who have been treating this kind cancer more often than any other vets, please let me know, I will bring my dog to see them, Thank you!!!, we would really like to see our dog pass his 10's birthday and Christmas this year.
oh Thanks for your information.it sure does help me to make the decision b4 commiting myself into getting a dog as a pet.I actually have a friend who actually called me up and telling me a shocking story. there's one day she was walking her dog (3 yrs plus) and let him off leash as usual so that he can roam w/i the house compound after walking him. her sis accidentally pressed the autogate button n the gate was opened.and the dog rushed out. at the mean time, there was a guy walking 2 smaller breed dogs(shih tzu and another breed which she tihnk it's pomerian).my friend's dog rushed out and 'attacked' the 2 dogs. he didnt bite them.(at least the dogs were not hurt after the incident) the guy was afraid that my friend's dog was going to hurt his dogs and tried his best to push my friend's dog away. and accident happened. the guy was bitten by my friend's dog. my friend and her family members were very surprised as their dog is a people dog. he's ok with strangers and even very friendly to strangers.i have seen that dog for quite a no of times, i can guarantee that he's very friendly, just like to mount on people's leg, the situation has improved if compared to last time when he was young. my friend and her family have no idea what have triggered the dog to react this way. especially my friend was so worried that she cant sleep.she is now looking for someone to enlighten her on this matter.she was so sad that she called me up to release her stress. she loves her dog till she sometimes spoil him in a way. e.g. gave in easily, walking him( but it seems like the dog is walking her),pat him all the time.

here's some history about the dog because she used to tell her friends about her dog.while she walking him when he was a puppy, they were attacked by 2 big dogs in the neighbourhood. it happened for like 6 times. she was scared by those incidents so her family has decided to walk the dog at weird hours so that they wont meet the other dogs in order to prevent another attack or dog fight...and my friend's house gate is an autogate, so the family is scared that the dog will be a nuisance to the neighbourhood once the gate is accidentally opened.so they chained the dog and the chain is long. they still let the dog roam w/i the house freely whenevr they can. the dog rushed out everytime when the gate is opened. w/i the house compound, the dog is considered as very obedient, obey the commands but once the gate is opened, no matter what my friend does, he will rush out.the dog always come back home after rushing out. they do walk the dog as much as possible, at least once a day.the dog is very energetic too, never gets tired. the dog is not protective of his food at all. follows the command even though he's very hungry.her dog will be out of control when there is presence of other dogs. i personally think that her dog is adorable as i have played with him for a few times.

she's now doing research on what actually triggers that. i just thought of helping her to ask in this forum as she's really scared that her dog will be put down after the biting incident.(she called me up 3 am !!!!) she's wondering if it's because of sexual urge, dominance or something else?i can really feel her anxiety. she studies in overseas. she tries to come back as frequent as she can for the dog. she's wondering will castrating reduce her dog of wanting to go out.and when she browsing the SPCA website which actually encourages owners to castrate their pets. she's really very worried and i m scared that she will rush into making decisions. She's now looking for a reliable vet around her house as she;s thinking of castrating her dog, she lives around my area.

Hey ykim, I am glad that you are putting in such effort in getting your confusion (and questions) cleared before committing to owning a dog. Dog ownership comes with great responsibilities, including a commitment to love, care, protect and provide for your dog's lifetime.

Dr Dunker/Han/Nat have all given very useful info to answer your questions, and here is my 2 cents worth from a trainer’s point of view…..

Canine aggression can be classified into more than 10 types. As to your question on what triggers a dog to bite/attack a human, there are many possibilities. From my experience in structuring behavior modification programmes for my clients with dogs that have aggression issues, most of the time, these aggression stem from lack of training or improper upbringing by owner, fear/ anxiety, stress and pain-related factors. Because I also do shelter work as a volunteer trainer, more than 90% of the aggression cases I receive, or come to know of, are related to these key factors.

Fear aggression is usually directed at humans, often because in the past people have used inappropriate punishment, excessive force, or punished the dog when he was already in a fearful state. People often use punishers with poor timing and the dog becomes confused. The dog then quickly associates not understanding what humans want (confusion) with punishment. Now the fearful aggressive behavior is easily triggered if any human looks even the least bit threatening, or the human displays a behavior the dog doesn’t understand or has not seen.

As for dogs that “go mad” when seeing other dogs, this is a very normal canine behavior especially when the dog lacks early socialization (with other dogs). Dogs who are highly or easily stressed by the presence of other dogs (the dog may perceive the other dog as a threat as a result of lack of understanding the signals or canine language from the other dog) is also a major contributor to dog-to-dog aggression. All that said, a dog that seems to “go mad” when seeing other dogs could just be greeting each other. Of course, there are dogs who are not just socially inept, but who are actively “looking for trouble”.

Normal dogs with adequate early experiences (from puppyhood), including opportunities to interact with dogs and humans, understand and use signals that allow them to avoid aggressive behavior. These signals are your canine’s natural language and dogs are intuitive about it. By contrast, dogs who lack early experience, are not well educated, or have experienced trauma may have “lost” their native language, or, more accurately, no longer believe that language “works”. It is thus our responsibility to help our dogs regain their language, to the degree that we can. In short, humans need to learn some dog language, just as dogs need to learn some human language, so that we can all interact with optimum understanding. Learning your dog’s language and teaching your dog human language are what training is all about.

Remember…..If you have to say it in a sentence, your dog will never get it because dogs do not use the same language we do.

Take your time to research and find out as much as you can about owning a dog and what are the commitments attached to it. We have a great panel of vets here that can help. If you do get a puppy, start him early on basic obedience training to help him behave in acceptable ways within his human pack, where you are his leader. When training your dog, you learn to use a ‘bridge’ that helps close the human-canine communication gap and thus, build a bond with your dog that is based on trust, understanding and respect.

Good luck in finding out if you are ready to care for a dog!
