Well done! Well done!
Turn out was waaaaayy better than previous years. Well organised. And I think everyone had fun, despite not entering any of the games. I came at 8.30am and was too late for most of the games were already full. But still had a nice time ;)

Thanks, Groovy, for being such a good sport and letting us put the kings cape and crown on you :) We had to 'crown' you properly as the first ever malaysian dogathon idol, you see  you put on a great performance - especially loved the balancing trick on your masters feet. All hail king groovy!!

Dear all,

This is a little late, but as the director of Dogathon 2006, I'll like to thank everyone who made the time for the event on Aug 13th, and to those who helped to spread the news around and brought friends to the event, to vet.com.my for helping to email all their members to inform them of Dogathon and also to all my friends and team members so sacrificed so much of their time to make this event (10th anniversary!!) such a memorable one. The organizing of the entire event took many many months and i am glad that the commitee this year has been able to live up to all the great achievements of Dogathon in the past..

Best of all is that we are able to use this event as a platform to inform the public about Pro-kasih(Stray animal neutering project) and also to raise funds for it!

So everyone, a BIG thank you again, and do support the vet students in their efforts to raise funds and create awareness for the strays, and most of all, to continue the "legend" of Dogathon!

Yours,

sueyee

News Resources for Dogathon 2006

***********************************

Fun outing for dogs, and for a good cause, too

Source: The Star

PEALS of laughter and shouts of excitement mingled with sounds of barking and whining at Bukit Ekspo in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) recently as 450 dogs gathered for the Dogathon 2006.

Organised by the university’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Zoologico Club students with project director Lim Sue Yee heading the event, it was aimed at raising funds for the Pro-Kasih animal welfare project.

Apart from being a fun-filled day for the dogs and canine lovers, the event served as a platform to teach responsible dog ownership.

Pro-Kasih is a project run by the students with the objective of reducing the number of stray dogs and cats via neutering the existing stray population and increasing awareness of animal welfare in the community.

‘ARF’ THEY GO ... The highlight of the event was the Dogathon.

The Dogathon was first held in 1997 as a platform to address the issue of stray dog awareness.

Themed “Pirates: All Paws on Deck”, the 10th Dogathon was launched by UPM Faculty of Veterinary Medicine dean Prof. Dr Mohd Zamri Saad.

Present at the opening ceremony were UPM Faculty of Veterinary Medicine deputy dean (academic and student affairs) Assoc. Prof. Dr Saleha Abdul Aziz, Pedigree marketing head Ong Chiek Ming, Paws Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) representative Sarah Mills and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) chairperson Christine Chin.

The highlight of the event was the Dogathon Race, in which both the canines and their owners went on a marathon run of about 2km around the Bukit Ekspo grounds.

Other dog-and-owner events included the Fastest Eating Duo competition, Master Hunt game, Dogathon Idol competition, Treasure Hunt, Musical Chairs game and obedience demonstrations by the Malaysian Kennel Association.

There were also lucky draws, grooming demonstrations/services by Yuri Grooming, free physical examinations, vet consultations and first aid, balloon sculpting and horseback riding activities.

Run along, little doggy ... dogs and their owners participating in the Dogathon Race.

Among those spotted having a good time were Nicholas Chua and Sally Low, who came with Sheena, their three-and-a-half-year-old English Cocker Spaniel.

“We dressed her up in a little devil costume as we couldn’t find any pirate costumes,” said Chua, 35, in reference to Sheena’s little orange-and-black outfit that came complete with tiny wings and horns.

“We’ve been coming to the Dogathon with Sheena for the past three years - it’s a family outing for all three of us.”

Another couple spotted pampering their pooches was Joseph and Lucy Au, who came with Misha and Sophie, their four-year-old female Schnauzers.

“We attended the Dogathon for the first time three years ago and have been regulars ever since because it’s an enjoyable and fun event,” said Joseph.

“It’s a well-organised event – the organisers provided dog-owners with bags to clean up after their dogs, they’ve set up water stations for the dogs and provided very informative stuff to educate the public about caring for dogs,” he added.

Two enormous and lovable dogs belonging to Kenny Kwang, Cheah Mei Yee and Julie Kong that were walking around the Dogathon venue attracted a lot of attention from visitors who paused to take photos with the dogs.

(From left) Kenny Kwang, Cheah Mei Yee and Julie Kong with their dogs Angel, a sixyear- old female Saint Bernard (left) and Liono, a 15-year-old male Chow Chow.

“Angel is a six-year-old female Saint Bernard while Liono is a 15-year-old male Chow Chow,” said Kwang.

“We’ve been coming to Dogathon since year 2000 because it is a healthy activity for us and our dogs, and we enjoy meeting up with other dog lovers.”

“Organisations like PAWS and SPCA need the people’s support and it is important to educate the public about taking proper care of dogs.”

It was a family affair for Robert Kau, 36, who attended the event with his wife, Jeslyne, six-year-old daughter Carmenn, seven-month-old daughter Chloe and four-year-old male Labrador Retriever Jack.

“Events like this provide good exercise and help to promote a healthy lifestyle,” said Kau of the Dogathon Race, adding that he went for a morning run with Jack every day.

Various exhibitors and sponsors had set up booths to showcase their products and services, including Pet Fashion Trading, a distributor for pet apparel, accessories, houses and bags, as well as Pet-n-You, a company that conducts dog obedience and agility training.

Pet-n-You trainer Andrew See explained that agility training required a dog to complete a course that incorporated a series of obstacles without any faults and thus it was essential that the dog could be controlled.

“We recommend that the dog go through a basic obedience course to learn basic commands like “wait”, “sit” and “go” before taking on agility training.

“Practice is also important because you need to teach the dog how to take on the obstacles and overcome its fears,” said See.
