Good day,

My name is Shirley Lim and i am a fresh graduate from USM, penang, completed my bachelor's degree in Biology and majoring in Zoology.
I would love to become a veterinary one day and for a start, i would really love to work with associations related to animals and veterinary.
As im doing Zoology, i am wondering how should i go for Veterinary masters? Which university has masters for veterinary science?
Ive tried applying for jobs in Zoos and bird parks... so far, still unemployed. I really love to work in places like in the zoo, pet shops etc to gain experience. Ive even tried calling up the SPCA.
I hope someone (doctors or vets or anyone) can give me some guidelines... or inform me for any job vacancies.
I thank you in advance.

From what I know there is only one university in Malaysia that offers Master of Veterinary Medicine/Science - UPM. Perhaps you should visit or call the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UPM to find out more about the postgraduate programmes.

Yes, UPM has the only vet faculty in M'sia. So, if you're interested to get a masters in Vet Science, thats your only choice. But you should also know that taking a Masters or PhD in Vet Science would not allow you to practice or to call yourself a veterinarian. You need to get a degree (DVM or BVSc) for that.

Since you have a Zoology major and want to work with animals, I would suggest you do not limit yourself to Zoos or pet shops only. You could also apply to work with the government's wildlife department, or work with NGOs like WWF or MNS (SPCA Selangor had a vacancy, but was filled recently).

And you should not limit yourself to working only in Sarawak or Penang. In fact, you should not limit yourself to local associations. Try out international associasions like HSI, WSPA, PETA, RSPCA, etc.

Thanks Dr Nat, I will look up for the other associations as well... Thank you very much for telling me on taking masters on Vet Science. I will try my best to look for opportunities around Malaysia and internationally.
Thanks again!

umm can i ask a question? i'm sitting for my pmr this year and my dream is to be a vet but i heard you can only study overseas to be a vet, the type who does surgeries and all and is there any other way than going overseas, because i know to go overseas you have to get really good results in exams but i just came from england last year after staying for 6 yrs and and i want to know if there is still a big chance of me being an animal surgeon.

The DVM degree here in UPM has surgery and anesthesia as part of it's core corriculum, and plus the title we get after graduating is 'Veterinary Surgeon', which entitled us to do surgeries (alot are basic ones like neutering) and also handle anesthesia. This is what set us apart from human medical doctors, since their degree do not certify them to handle surgeries and anesthesia --> info from a cosmate with a sis who's a medical doctor.

So if you're thinking of overseas, why not try here first? Plus, overseas vet degrees is not confined to the 'ang-moh' countries, cos you can also go for the ones in Indon (hey, don't look down on them!) like Gadjah Mada or Bogor since the faculty has MOUs with 'em.

Quote: i know to go overseas you have to get really good results in exams It might be too early for you since you're taking PMR this year (hey! You're the same age with my youngest sis!), why not see which stream you preferred first, then score good results for SPM, then aim the same for STPM/Matrics/Dip/A-levels and see where you stand from there?

I don't think that's a factor, provided you have a good command in both English and BM and also good results for the exams above. There is still a fair chance. I too went off to England but only for 6 months in form 2, but I still managed to enter vet school, so why not you too?

So, good luck for your PMR!
