Quote: Horses in Focus Photography Competition
07.02.2006
Many exciting photographs have been submitted for the Horses in Focus Photography Competition and we are very pleased with the response.
Most of these entries are from non-equestrian people and their efforts are commendable. The photographs include shots of horse racing, people and horses, horses in sports, people working with horses and Malaysia’s famous Cowboys of the East. We are certain that the judges will have a tough time deciding the winners.
Due to numerous requests from budding equestrian shutterbugs to extend the deadline to allow them more time to find that winning shot, we have extended the deadline to February 28, 2006.
So all you photographers out there, you still have a chance to win fabulous prizes. Snap that shot that will capture the imagination of the judges! |

Wah shyeow, I thought I was the only horse lover here! Hopefully I will be making the rosettes for them this year as I had for the past two KL Grand Prix.
BTW, in case you didn't know, this is THE event in the world's Showjumping calender. All the top 20 showjumpers (human and horses) will be attending.
Having attended most of the Equestrian events in Malaysia for the past 6-7 years, I wouldn't miss this one for the world (esp. since my bro-in-law is stable manager!!!)!
I advise those of you who have never been to a horse show to at least attend this one - you may never again get the opportunity to be near multi million dollar horses again!! Unfortunately you have to pay to get in but IT'S WORTH IT! |

The World’s Best Will Run & Jump to Compete at World Cup Final in Kuala Lumpur
Source: Equestrian News Release
Wellington, FL- April 20, 2006 – The FEI World Cup Finals are fast approaching and the final steps for preparations are being made. The crème de la crème of the horse world are ready to descend upon the fascinating city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from April 26th through 30th. These competitors will be rigorously competing for four days on the OttoSport® Arena Foundation Mat System, internationally well known for providing horses and riders with the highest level of stability and security by eliminating all footing inconsistencies. These elite riders will have the added boost to their crucial confidence levels of knowing that their horses’ footfalls will be consistently supported by the fully proven, highly regarded OttoSport Arena Foundation Mat System. When winning or losing is decided by hair’s-breadth split seconds, just knowing that their mounts’ feet will not slip out from under them, no matter how fast they speed around the course, can make the difference between being a champion or an also-ran.
OttoSport® International is a family owned German company that has built a big name in equestrian facilities. Founded by Werner Otto over 24 years ago, his patented OttoSport® shock absorbing arena foundation system is widely known throughout Europe and has been installed in over 7,000 arenas worldwide.
The OttoSport® system (foundation matting and homogenized sand/fiber footing) has been the footing of choice in many world class venues, from the 1996 Olympic Games held in Atlanta, Georgia, to the 1998 World Equestrian Games in Rome, to numerous World Cup Qualifiers worldwide. This dependable system is already in place for the 2006 WEG in Aachen, Germany. OttoSport® has become synonymous with the extraordinary performance and high standards of the world’s most successful and discriminating equestrians.
OttoSport® offers the ultimate in stability, load spread and safety, with shock absorption built in. It is the only arena mat engineered specifically for equine use. Each square meter mat has 240 “lockout rings” that are wider at the bottom and narrower at the top, enabling the mats to be securely embedded into a crushed gravel base. Undulating safety knobs reduce the possibility of slipping to the absolute minimum. Drainage holes allow water to evacuate quickly, while some water is retained by the unique reservoirs on the upper surface of the mats to provide consistently moist footing.
“OttoSport’s reputation worldwide is impeccable,” said Joy Köch owner of ComfortStall® Stable Supply Co. Köch added, “We were privileged to have the Thomas (owner of Brentina) and McDonald families relate to us their satisfaction with their OttoSport installations and build the bridge for us to become the exclusive North American distributor”.
ComfortStall® Stable Supply offers 21st Century products that turn barns and rings into extremely safe & therapeutic functional facilities for equestrians’ demanding needs. “What’s underfoot is what we’re all about,” expressed Koch. Her perspective is that the surface on which your horse stands, rests, performs, and travels has a direct connection to his soundness and health – and she knows that once compromised, health and soundness can be elusive or impossible to regain.
“We specialize in products that enhance horses’ comfort and safety to increase the athletic longevity of your valued partner by reducing injuries, vet bills and lay-ups. As equestrians, we want nothing but the best for our horses,” expressed Köch. “ComfortStall® Stable Supply Co. works hard to bring you cutting edge technologies that are functionally developed to save you money on your bottom line – with horses accidents are so expensive!
In 2005 The Las Vegas World Cup Final was swept away by Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and her superstar horse ShutterFly. Meredith and her husband Marcus have been long time customers and supporters of the OttoSport Arena System. Beerbaum recently thanked Werner Otto for providing the most consistent base on which to train and stated their arena is in the exact same condition as the day they installed it over 8 years ago.
Beerbaum will be returning to defend her title. With the roster of horses and riders attending, it will be a very exciting ride to the finish, and the trophy could belong to anyone. |

Dr. Nat, they do sell tickets at the door.
The show starts today and everyone at Asia Promote are stressed. I had the opportunity to meet a couple of riders yesterday and they are ready to go with all guns blazing! Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to view the stables and horses coz I couldn't find my bro-in-law.
Do go and see the show! |

Another follow-up..

************************
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - April 26, 2006 - The already reduced United States squad for the World Cup Final of Jumping, being held in Asia for the first time, scratched the West Coast horse McGuinness, who was running a fever Wednesday.
Ten U.S. riders - seven from the East Coast and three from the West Coast - were selected to compete against 40 other riders from 22 countries in the 28th annual indoor riding championships.
However, before the competition began, McLain Ward of Brewster, N.Y. and Jimmy Torano of Ft. Lauderdale, FL., pulled out. Ward, a 2004 Athens Olympic Gold Medalist, is scheduled to be on the American team that launches its defense of the Samsung Super League title in the first of eight competitions in La Baule, France next week. He’ll compete on the same horse, Goldika, that he qualified for this World Cup.
Torano opted not to take part in the World Cup, being held in this tropical capital of Malaysia, the first Asian venue for the championship that is typically held in Western Europe or the United States. Kuala Lumpur is so humid that the temporary tent stables are air conditioned, as is the entire indoor riding arena
McGuinness, an 11-year-old gelding, was to be ridden by Rich Fellers. A U.S. team spokesperson said that after the long flight from Los Angeles, broken up with a two-day stay in Amsterdam to help ease travel stress, the horse was discovered to have a temperature on arrival in Kuala Lumpur. Such reactions to long flights, with significant temperature changes, are not unusual, and the spokesperson said that the decision was made to scratch McGuinness for the sake of the horse's health, rather than wait to see if he recovered sufficiently to compete.
The remaining U.S. riders in the World Cup Final jumped their horses in a warm up class Wednesday in the large indoor arena within a complex of stadiums and sports facilities built in 1998 for the Commonwealth Games.
The Americans that are scheduled to ride in the competition that begins Thursday, with the Final Sunday, are Margie Goldstein-Engle of Wellington, FL. with Hidden Creek Alibi and Quervo Gold, Laura Kraut of Oconomowoc, WI. and Anthem, Kent Farrington of Greenwich, CT. and Madison, Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, N.Y. and Judgement, Alison Firestone of Upperville, VA., Richard Spooner and Cameron Hills Shanroe, and Joie Gaitlin and Suncal’s King.

Show Jumping: World's best ready to show off
Source: New Straits Times
FOR the first time, the world’s top show jumping and equestrian riders and their exquisitely groomed horses are in Kuala Lumpur for the FEI World Cup Jumping Final which starts today.
The appetiser to Sunday’s main event at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil is the KL Grand Prix (Asian Classics, Young Rider Series and KL Grand Prix Tour) which is scheduled for today.
The first of the three finals, however, is scheduled for tomorrow. Some of the world’s top riders and their horses are poised to enthrall the audiences with a grand display of understanding between rider and beast.
World Champion Meredith Michael-Beerbaum of Germany is here, and so are Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa and Sweden’s Malin Baynard — just some of the stars who will be in action in the five-day event.
Malaysia is the first Asian country to host this prestigious event and will be represented in the Final by the nation’s leading rider Syed Omar Syed Bakar Almodzhar, 27, and his horse Lui.
"Lui is a 12-year-old gelding which I have had for a year now," said the Belgium-based Syed Omar (picture).
"Together, we have competed in 30 international competitions, the experience of which I hope will help me finish in the top 15 here."
Syed Omar’s brothers Syed Mohsin, 25, and Syed Zain, 23, no strangers to the local equestrian scene, will be competing in the Asian Classics series.
Another Malaysian, Quzier Ambak, however opted not to compete in the event, as he is preparing his 15 year-old horse Calano for December’s Doha Asian Games.
"Calano is considered very young, so I am saving him for the Asian Games," said Quzier.
"Also, he just underwent treatment for a tooth infection. Besides, the Grand Prix is an indoor event, while in Doha, it will be outdoors.
"An indoor course is half the size of an outdoor one, so it is two very different preparations. That is why I decided to just ride Calano for the Asian Games so as not to stress him out," said Quzier.
But Quzier’s younger brother, Qabil, who is based in Belgium, will be competing in the Asian Classics.
The Final will be beamed live to a worldwide audience of an estimated 700 million which will surely do wonders to promote Malaysia.
With this in mind, organisers Asia Venture Promotes have added a Malaysian touch to the indoor course where horses will tackle jumps with motifs in batik, Terengganu boats, kuda kepang, wayang kulit and bunga raya among others.
The event will also showcase exciting side events and activities such as a carnival and the ‘Malam Kuda Gemilang’ on Saturday which will be a night of local and international performances with horses. |

Some news:
****************************
Royal Highnesses, Excellencies, Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen …
Source: Equestrian News Release
Kuala Lumpur, MY – April 27, 2006 – With the spirited beating of a ceremonial drum, Mrs. Azalina Othman Said, Malaysia’s Minister of Youth and Sports declared the 28th World Cup Show Jumping Final “officially open”. A distinguished cast of dignitaries, including the FEI’s out-going President, HRH Doña Pilar de Bourbon, also attended the spectacular opening ceremony at Kuala Lumpur’s Putra Stadium on the southern outskirts of Malaysia’s capital city. It is the first time in the event’s 28-year history that a World Cup final has been hosted outside either Europe or North America.
Earlier, local school children in colorful aboriginal costumes started the ball rolling with an eclectic mix of music and dance symbolizing the old Malaya and modern day Malaysia, while Pony Club riders from throughout the country led a charge around the arena on ponies kitted out in the national flags of their home states.
Marching bands, ceremonial flag wavers balancing 20-foot flagpoles on their chins, stilt walkers, a percussion group whose deafening drum beating reverberated throughout the arena, undoubtedly causing some consternation in the nearby stables, and finally a parade of military horses, wearing the national flags of the competing nations heralded the start of this 28th World Cup Show Jumping Final.
This annual event, a winter series indoor championship, has grown from just two leagues, Europe and North America, in its first 1978/79 season, to 14 World Cup leagues in 2005/06 that circle the globe. Nine of these leagues are represented in Kuala Lumpur: the Western European league by 18 riders, North America with 7, Australia with 2, and Japan, New Zealand, South-East Asia, Central Asia, South America and South Africa permitted one rider apiece. Each final runs over three separate legs, a speed class on day one in which faults are added to each rider’s time, followed by a Table A, one round with one jump-off class on day two, and a final two rounds over different courses for the top placed riders on the last day. Two thirds of the first round competitors are allowed to compete in the second round, of whom half qualify for the third and final let.
A great many of the riders who participated in the first ever World Cup Final in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1979 are still competing today, including US internationals Norman Dello Joio (World Cup titleholder for 1983) and Katie Prudent (runner-up in 1979), but the first appearance by any of this year’s line-up was Michael Whitaker in 1985 when he finished sixth.
During the early years of the World Cup, U.S. riders dominated the finals claiming victories in 1980 and 1985 (Conrad Homfeld), 1981 (Michael Matz), 1982 (Melanie Smith), 1983 (Norman Dello Joio), 1986 (Leslie Burr-Lenehan – now Leslie Howard). However, Katherine Burdsall’s win in 1987 riding The Natural marked the end of an era that has yet to be revisited.
Since then, the most memorable, and history-making victories, have been provided by Brazilian Rodrigo Pessoa, the first rider to complete a hat-trick of wins in 1998 (Helsinki, Finland), 1999 (Gothenburg, Sweden) and 2000 (Las Vegas, NV) all accomplished riding the same horse, the great Selle Français stallion, Baloubet du Rouet.
Unique to this World Cup Final are the five trophies that will be awarded, each grounded in Malaysian tradition, myth and legend, and each one telling its own story. The Tanjak trophy for the winner resembles a royal Malaysian headdress worn for centuries by the country’s rulers. The Labu Sayong trophy, shaped as a traditional earthenware rug will be awarded to the World Cup runner-up, while the Keris Jawa Demam trophy, representing the traditional Malay dagger is for the winner of the Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix. Another culturally inspired trophy, the Rebana Ubi will be awarded to the highest-placed Asian rider, and finally the Kuda Kepang will go to the champion of the concurrent Young Riders’ tour. |

All,
It was an amazing final of finals! I can safely say that my breath was held until the very last fence was cleared! Amazing! I'm glad I went and, patting myself on the back, I thought the rosettes looked pretty good on the horses too!!!! (I'm praising myself here - nevermind! :) ) |
