Livestock demand on the rise

18th July 2006

PENANG is suitable for livestock farming of goats and sheep which are in high demand by the many nasi kandar restaurants in the state for their produce.

Compared to cows and buffaloes – the more popular livestock among the farmers - the smaller animals require less grazing ground, said the Veterinary Services Depart-ment.

Statistics for North Sebe-rang Prai (SPU) district sho-wed some 533 livestock far-mers who are active, raising mainly cows.

There were 4,133 cows, 1,173 goats, 296 sheep and 51 buffaloes.

However, the head count made up only 8% to 10% of actual meat consumption.

The rest of the meat is im-ported frozen from Australia and New Zealand, said Vete-rinary Services Department director (livestock and industry development) Dr Ibrahim Che Embong.

“The increasing demand for protein and livestock produce is attracting more people into the sector,” he said.

He was speaking during a recent briefing attended by Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shariff Omar.

The district veterinary services officer Dr Ismail Khan Gulzar Muhamad, Dr Shaha-rul Akmar Talib and other Pe-nang veterinary services officers also attended the briefing held at Tasek Gelugor Umno division office.

Mohd Shariff said the go-vernment wanted livestock farmers to commercialise their activities to reduce de-pendence on imported meat.

“We look for farmers with experience, interest and commitment – those who are really qualified for government aid under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

“We will help them to up-grade and expand their operations.

“They must treat their farms as businesses and dare to invest in them.

“They must not treat the subsidies given as merely aid to earn them extra cash,” he said.

Later, Mohd Shariff visited a farm in Desa Puri, Permatang Berangan, near Tasek Gelugor, which has 30 cows and 12 buffaloes.
