Live Ducks From Malaysia Arriving In Singapore
Date: 3 July 2006
Source: Bernama
SINGAPORE, July 3 Asia Pulse - Live ducks from the Malaysian state of Perak began to arrive in Singapore on Friday, now that the suspension on poultry imports from Perak and Selangor has been lifted.
Thousands of live ducks began arriving as early as 5am at the Tuas checkpoint, bound for cooking pots in food courts and restaurants in Singapore.
An Agri-food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) spokesperson told Bernama that as at noon, a total of 26,028 ducks in 18 trucks from Perak had arrived at the checkpoint.
AVA, Singapore's food security agency, announced on Wednesday that it was lifting the suspension on imports of poultry and poultry products from the now bird flu-free zones in the Selangor and Perak Friday after being satisfied that the disease had been effectively eliminated from poultry in Malaysia.
With the lifting of the suspension, five chicken broiler farms and one layer farm in Selangor will be reinstated for exports to Singapore besides 37 duck farms in Perak.
Singapore consumes about 14,800 tonnes of duck meat and 1.16 billion eggs per year.
Prior to the import suspension, Selangor supplied about 3 per cent of eggs and Perak, about 80 per cent of ducks consumed in Singapore.
The resumption of duck imports from Perak cheered up duck rice sellers and duck slaughter house operators who had been hit hard by the suspension.
"I want Perak ducks, which are semi-free range and juicy and tender," Johnny Teo, roast duck operator in Toa Payoh, was quoted as saying by The Straits Times. |
