Ten-year-old boy still afraid after last year’s dog attack
Date: June 28, 2006
SEPANG: Ten-year-old Muhammad Hazman Khan Sheikh Zaini who was attacked by a Rottweiler a year ago was fearful when he had to identify the dog that bit him.
At the magistrate’s court yesterday where the dog owner was charged with negligence, Muhammad Hazman stayed close to Deputy Public Prosecutor Alfred Egin, squeezing the man’s hand as they approached a cage with three dogs in a Veterinary Services Department van parked outside the courthouse.
The boy pointed out the female Rottweiler that mauled him to magistrate Shazrill Ghazali.
In the dock was businessman Chong Foo Meng, 43, accused of negligence because his three dogs allegedly attacked Muhammad Hazman at Taman Putra Perdana in Puchong, on March 18 last year.
He testified that he was walking to a nearby mosque for Friday prayers with his two cousins that day when he saw three dogs under a tree. As they neared the tree, the dogs started to chase them.
“We tried to run back home but only my cousins made it. I ran into an abandoned house and the dogs came after me.
“I tried to run out of the house but I tripped and fell. That was when the dog got me,” he said.
Muhammad Hazman said his mother and a man then showed up and the man beat off the dogs with a mop.
The dog owner can be jailed up to six months, fined a maximum RM2,000, or both. The hearing continues on Sept 7. |

Just wondering under which law is that? For animal cruelty, it is only a max of 6 mths jail and/or RM200 fine. Seems unfair. Especially to the the dog. And I wonder what happened to the dog too? |

| Good point Dr Nat. I think The Star made an error on the fine. |
