Singapore to decide soon on resuming duck imports from Perak
Source: Channel NewsAsia
SINGAPORE: The Agri-food and Veterinary Authority Singapore (AVA) is finalising its assessment on duck farms in Perak and will come to a decision soon.
Its officers recently inspected the farms to assess whether poultry imports from Perak could be resumed.
Malaysia has declared the country to be free of the HPAI virus.
Parliamentary Secretary for National Development, Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman, made the announcement at an AVA Food Safety Awards event on Tuesday evening.
He said the government will continue to take a stern but pragmatic risk-managed approach towards food safety.
The risk management approach allows import of food from countries not totally disease-free.
AVA and Malaysia's Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), for example, have implemented Disease-Free Zones which allow for accredited farms to export poultry and egg imports from Malaysia to Singapore, even with outbreaks in other parts of the country.
Working with the US Department of Agriculture, risk management has also been used to prevent the mad cow disease from affecting meat brought to our market. |
