|
|
| Recently, an article in the newspapers concerning the high price of pork mentioned that one of the causes of the price increase is due to a scarcity caused by hand, foot and mouth disease. This is one of the examples of the confusion between HFMD and FMD. I've always been afraid that the FMD would sooner or later "morphed" into HFMD and there seems nothing the veterinary profession can do about it. There are implications concerning such confusion. Mistaking one disease that affects animals primarily with a disease that can be fatal to children can have adversely consequences for an important segment of the livestock industry. Veterinary authorities (DVS) and veterinary professional bodies (VAM) have a responsibility to educate the public. |

Quote: veterinary professional bodies (VAM) have a responsibility to educate the public
Veterinary Association Malaysia (VAM) has been trying hard to cope with so many issues lately.
Several important changes are on the way - including the changing of the VAM constitutions and the means of achieving various targets and objectives through better communication.
One thing about VAM is that it is run by volunteers. The exco members do not get a cent for doing all the works to protect the veterinary profession or promote public education.
Currently VAM is however running low on resources: manpower, financial, and the support from the young generation of veterinarians.
Hopefully this will change and more vets will be actively participate in VAM activities.
