FOOD, agriculture and health regulatory bodies will be grouped under one entity to monitor biosafety, sanitary and phyto-sanitary standards of imported and exported agriculture products.
The Malaysia Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Service (Maqis) will unite the inspectorate functions of departments such as Agriculture, Veterinary Services, Fisheries, Health, and Islamic Development (Jakim).
Presently, each department functions independently and stations its own officers at border entry points to conduct checks.
Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin told reporters today that instead of having them conduct their checks separately, it was better to have them work together under one body since their roles were similar.
Maqis will also simplify administrative procedures for importers and exporters when obtaining clearance from the various authorities for their goods. They will not need to go from one agency to another filling out different forms for their products.
