Dear Docs,
I have a budgie by the name of grumpie.
Of late i notice she has fungus-lookalike covering the whole of her two feet. Now her feet look whitish, dry and scaly.
And her beak looks kinda 'mouldy'. I know she needs to use the cuttlefish bone to strengthen her beak but she rejected it totally.
I'm worried about her current condition.. please give advices on the above symptoms.. :(
(sorry for any wrong terms used)
-edited- she also pee a lot daily, the waste is wet green and ants are attracted to it... is this normal??
TQ!

I think your little budgie has got "scaly face" (and feet), meaning a disease caused by mites, usually Knemidocoptes spp.
This is a treatable disease and the efficacy of treatment is usually excellent. You may request any vets to look at your budgie's problem and treat it accordingly. Your budgie should be fine. Don't forget to cover the cage with towel during the travel to your vet.
Alternatively, you can try more conservative treatment, like using oil/jelly (any oil/jelly, preferably vasoline/petroleum jelly) to "drown" the mites. Apply it on the affected area and try to clean out the scale/crust gently. Sometimes few applications is needed to resolve it completely. However, if the probelm is quite "generalized", I'll suggest you to consult your vet.
Hope this help. :D |

For your budgie's pee, I've no idea on it.
Because they have a common opening (the cloaca) the faeces will usually moist. It usually appears as a string of moist greenish yellowish faeces with a small puddle of fluid.
If you suspect your budgie is having diarrhoea (with evidence of a soiled vent) please consult your vet. |

It is advisable to consult a vet for the confirmation of a disease before giving any kind of treatment. "Scaly face mites" are quite common in budgies, and they can get better with the proper treatment.
Good luck with your little Grumpie! |

| Yes, inoformation and advise gained in the forum should not substitute vet consultation. |

msquick,
totally agree with the docs... I think you should immediately bring the bird to vet...
btw, I just want to add that budgies is very delicate, since they are small bird, they can die easily if get some disease... :( |

| Budgies and some other pet birds are vulnerable to stress... even mishandling will cause death to them. |

Hi Dr Chong!
Thanks so much for your kind advice! I have applied petroleum jelly on Grumpie two days ago and looks like whitish fungus-lookalike is slowly peeling off. Now her feet are reddish but I will apply later on to completely remove them.. though she bites real hard and.. painful :S
I will update you on her progress :D
Thanks again!!
