Three Aussie abattoirs gain halal approval

Three Australian abattoirs have obtained halal approval from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department for the slaughter of cattle, the Bernama reports.

Veterinary Services Department (JPH) acting director-general Datuk Mustapa Abd Jalil said the three abattoirs were able to meet the demand of the higher end market in the country for food that is permissible according to Islamic law after beef imports from Australia were stopped in June because of doubts of the halal status of the meat from there.

"As our need for beef and offal from Australia is only between 6,000 to 8,000 tonnes a year, we don't expect any shortage of beef in the market," he said in a statement.

The three abattoirs are Stanbroke Beef Pty Ltd, of Grantham in Queensland; Tasman Group Services, of Brooklyn in Victoria; and Novic Food Processing of Wodonga in Victoria.
