My 10 months old chihuahua got his bloodwork done again today (since the vet said there were a little bit of elevation last time.. liver enzymes are slightly elevated).
Blood test results:
ALT levels
June 2007 53
Jan 2008 378
Feb 2008 230
She told me that the results today improved, but it's still a bit out of range. She suggested that we put Bagel on a special diet for a month to see if it will help. It has to do with the blood not going through the livers adequately......
Ok this is what she is trying to give him:
Hill's Prescription Liver Diet
http://www.hillspet.com/zSkin_2/products... d=1408474395183868&bmUID=1203987390850
Ingredients:
Brewers Rice, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Egg Product, Soybean Meal, Pasta Product, Soy Fiber, Flaxseed, Pork Protein Isolate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Chicken Liver Flavor, Soybean Oil, Powdered Cellulose, Potassium Chloride, Glycerol Monostearate, Calcium Carbonate, vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin A Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Menadione Dimethylpyrimidinol Bisulfite (source of vitamin K)), Choline Chloride, Iodized Salt, L-Arginine, Taurine, minerals (Zinc Oxide, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), DL-Methionine, L-Tryptophan, L-Carnitine, Ethoxyquin (a preservative).
BUT IT HAS NO MEAT!!!!! brewers rice and pork fat seems disgusting...He normally eats Merrick's & Canidae. I personally prefer feeding holistic foods.
She also gave us these supplements called Zentinol.

My dog is a happy little guy, I just don't see anything wrong with him. I'm thinking whether the risks outweighs the benefits. |

ALT, an enzyme released when the liver is damaged does not go up for no reason. Then again ALT is not the only parameter i use to diagnose liver insult. Do you have the values for the total protein, globulin and albumin? How about AST and bilirubin as well. Or one can assume that all these are in the normal range. If that's the case, i don't think you got anything to lose if you were to put your dog on l/d for a while and have his blood bio chem checked again. Remember, l/d is NOT meant to be a long term diet in this case so ask your vet how long does he/she want your doggie to be on that food. 3 weeks to a months seems like a good duration to me.
"brewers rice and pork fat seems disgusting"... for you maybe, (that's why i don't recommend people to eat their dogs diet) but have you seen dogs eating half rotten garbage and look like they are eating fine cuisine? But in all fairness, i find l/d a bit low in "dog's tastiness index"(if there is such a thing, but you get my drift).
Remember also, for ANY prescription diet to work, your little friend have to be on that food and ONLY that food for the duration of the treatment. No treats no junk and no cheating!
Anyway i dunno if that is of any help but do keep us posted on your doggies condition. |
