WWF is looking for candidates who have seniority, technical experience and most importantly with drive and determination to share our passion for people and nature by taking on the following area of work:
Marine Biologist
Reporting to: Team Leader Kudat Banggi
Designated area of work: Tun Mustapha Marine Park
Based: Kudat, Sabah
Purpose of Job:
The Marine Biologist will work to further the gazettement and implementation of the Tun Mustapha Marine Park by providing coral reef ecosystem expertise to the team. The Marine Biologist will develop and implement monitoring systems for reef ecosystems and fish populations in areas around the marine park.
Key Outputs:
Baseline surveys and maps of project site reefs and fish populations using standard survey methods including underwater visual census.
Development and training of a community-based monitoring system and network.
Design, completion and publication of rapid assessments of reefs and fish populations around Tun Mustapha Marine Park.
Design of a reef and fish monitoring network around Tun Mustapha Marine Park.
Production of technical education and awareness materials relating to marine conservation, marine protected areas and fisheries.
Major Activities:
Design, plan, conduct and report baseline surveys, ReefCheck surveys and other resource uses around the proposed Tun Mustapha Marine Park.
Design, plan, conduct and report on training for communities and management authorities for resource monitoring in the proposed Tun Mustapha Marine Park.
Collaborating with Sabah Parks and Universiti Malaysia Sabah Borneo Marine Research Institute to design a monitoring network throughout the park area.
Design and production of awareness and education materials about marine biology, conservation, fisheries and marine protected areas.
Researching, assessing and testing of alternative livelihood activities.
Conducting socio-economic surveys based on SocMon methodologies.
Assisting with all community consultation activities in Tun Mustapha Marine Park.
Participate wholeheartedly in the general activities of WWF-Malaysia, whether or not the focus of any particular activity is within the sphere of other aspects of this job description.
Specifications:
A post graduate degree in tropical marine biology or any related field with field biology experience, good writing skills.
Experience with standard tropical marine biological and socio-economic survey methodologies (ReefCheck, LIT, UVC, SocMon).
SCUBA certification, instructor level preferred.
GIS/remote sensing knowledge an advantage.
At least 2 years working in tropical marine conservation and research.
Excellent written and oral skills in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
Excellent organising and management skills.
Good interpersonal skills, innovative thinking, versatile ability to work in a team and work independently.
Good understanding of current issues especially having knowledge on marine environmental and conservation issues.
