Hi there.
I would like to find out if Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis is common in the tropical countries?
Thank you.

Why do you ask? Do you have an animal that you suspect might have EPM? As far as I know, most all the cases are in animals that are in North America or have been there before. Even in the US it is not exactly a very common disease.

Thanks for your reply.
I am asking because I'm studying what are the neurological diseases of horses living in the tropics. There aren't a lot of information on this on the internet, not for tropical animals anyway. So I thought I'll seek for opinion here.

So, are you studying for fun? or an assignment? or do you have a horse that is neurologic? It is easier to give recommendations if I know the situation better. I have seen and treated horses with EPM and a variety of neurological disease so I may be of some help however, it is a huge topic so I need specifics.

Actually I am studying the effects of antioxidant supplements (Vitamin E in particular) in horses, especially for exercising/performing horses during hot and humid conditions. I will look at oxidative stress protection of course, apart from this, the potential benefits of antioxidants in helping horses recover from neurological diseases.

Do you think antioxidant supplements help the horse to recover better from a neurologic condition? Appreciate your advice.

Actually, deficiency in Vitamin E (and Selenium) does lead to a neurological disease in horses called the Lower-motor neuron disease (which I have also seen and treated before). Of course in those cases I would treat the animal with injectable Selenium and vitamin E and put them on supplements but this is mainly because the area I work in is deficient in Selenium in the soil therefore animals that only graze in these pastures or eat hay produced in selenium deficient soils will eventually have problems. So, Most horses here do have some selenium & vit E supplements and if they don't, then I recommend that they do.... neurological disease or not. So, the websites or articles that you read are probably written by people living in Selenium deficient areas and I must say MANY horse farms do not supplement or do not supplement enough.

It seems like you are writing some sort of thesis or manuscript and for that, you really need published or recorded data. Anecdotal reports are dangerous and would represent a very big area of contention when defending the thesis or seeking peer review approval. My advice is stay away from making statements like that especially since your main topic is about performance and not about the effects on disease.
