|
|
My hamster initially had a huge buildup of ear wax in his left ear that I never noticed. It built to a point that it potruded from the ear. It smells of ear wax, and also smells bad, making it a likely case of ear infection, I'm guessing. It blocked the entire ear. He also had an episode of fur loss around his neck and head.
Upon noticing, I brought him to a pet store for advice, and the proprietor asked me to put in some herbal ear drops for animals regularly, saying it would loosen the wax and he'd shake it out. So I did as he asked.
A week later, however, his entire ear flap has closed over and gotten stuck to the ear wax/infection and become totally rock solid, making him effectively deaf in one ear. It's impossible to pry that ear open without hurting him, I know. The left side of his head (where his ear is) has also swollen.
Recently, I noticed that his left eye was shut 'cause of discharge (sticky eye), and I don't know if it's related to the ear infection or not. I got a soft damp tissue and cleaned it out, so he could open his eye once again (3/4 open, anyway).
He's getting to be about 1 year and 8 months old so far.
Could I please have some comments on the situation, and give a rough ballpark figure of what his treatment at the vet may be? Would most vets even treat hamsters? Would he require surgery? I've a feeling he's gonna lose that ear anyhow.
Thanks in advance.
Update: His sticky eye thing could be more than mere sticky eye. Everyday I come home to the same thing (3 days now) and today it's starting to look a little reddish in the skin around his eye. *Sigh* Totally deaf in the left ear, gonna be blind in the left eye... I'm gonna lose him soon, aren't I?
Update: Well, he's gone. Thanks to whoever bothered to read this. Rest in peace, Snowbum. |
