I brought my 6 month pug for a check-up and to get consultation on neutering him.
The vet discovered that he has an undescended testicle. She asked me to bring him back in a few months time.
If the testicle has yet to descend by then, she advises us to remove it during the neutering procedure.
Is it advisable to remove the undescended testicle and what would be the risks/ side effects?
She quoted a price of about RM400 for the operation. Is that reasonable? |

an undescended testicle carries with s tremendous increased risk for testicular cancer particularly Sertoli cell tumor, increased risk for spermatic chord torsion and retention of male behaviour (although undescended testes usually are infertile). I would say leaving a dog intact is fine but leaving an undescended testes in the abdomen is not. my 2 cents.
About the price, you need to see what is being offered with the price more than the price itself. Veterinary medicine is about health care service and it is the same as going to a fancy private hospital where you get more care versus a more basic government hospital. Both are okay but you get different service and care. It is not like getting a digital camera from E-Bay versus Bukit BIntang where the product is the same. take everything into account and if you are not happy, look for a different vet... |

| The price is not too bad. And yes it is recommended that the undescended testicle to be removed after few more months. However I would support spaying/neutering to no matter male/female dogs regardless of breed. |

Undescended testicle is always best to be removed, especially those in the abdomen. The descended testicle is normally removed as well because cryptochidism is heriditary, means it can pass the gene to the off spring. So better to neuter the dog.
The risk of sertoli cell tumour in retained testicle is more than 13times higher than that of normal dog. But that doesn't mean if not removed, it will definitely be a tumour. But it is a timebomb which you don't know when it is be time out. The good news is, most of clinical signs resulting from the tumour will disappear once the tumour is removed. The tumour rarely spread to other part of the body. Rarely does not equal never.
Take home message, better to neuter. |
