Demodectic Mange can this be treated if the bitch is pregnant? and will she pass it on to her pups?

actually a bitch confirmed suffering from demodectic mange should not be bred and should be removed from the 'breeding stock' as most likely her pups will suffer the same fate.

to treat a pregnant bitch with overt demodectic mange is tricky as pregnancy rules out most conventional drugs. the most probable reason why the bitch is suffering from an outbreak of demodectic mange is most probably because of the stress of pregnancy that lowers the immunity of the bitch.

Thanks for the quick repley, my neighbour showed me there dog, looks like a street dog, heavy pregnant, covered in mange, wasnt sure if drugs could be used as i dont have that knowledge, Gave them a bar of kura soap, but will tell them what u said, How long after she gives birth can they be treated....and will the menge if treated keep coming back? she is a mix breed so i dont think breeding was planned....Have already told them to get her done...maybe money is a problem as well... Not sure all the details.....

Since you say its a street dog, you can also suspect sarcoptic mange. This is more common in street dogs and are easier to treat. Once it is treated, it seldom comes back, unless of course... she goes off into the streets again.

Demodectic mange on the other hand will be an on-going problem. Most of the time, once this is diagnosed on the dog, then you'll have to think about long term management, rather than 100% cure.

Usually drugs that are dangerous to be used in pregnant or lactating dogs can be safely used once again when the puppies are fully weaned. This is usually 2 months or slightly more after birth.

Its not so easy to die of mange. Street dogs usually die first of other things, e.g. accidents, infections, etc. But because the mange is there, they'll never feel comfortable (or look good).
