As I got my Rottweiler 6 months plus to treat for the diarrhea, the vet has checked his hips and told me that his hind right leg feel painful while he's trying to extend it backward, therefore it shows there's a tendency to get hip displasia in future.

Would like to know what kind of prevention methods can be used to avoid it. As the vet told me that slick floor can cause hip dysplasia, I've done some research online and quite some articles said that OFA does not take slick floor as the cause of Hip Dysplasia, BUT it is the cause to worsen the sickness IF the dog already have Hip Dysplasia.

My boy is staying in the place with mozaic flooring. It's slick but he likes to play "skating" on this kind of floor. The addition is, mozaic flooring brings him cool feeling, so he always lie down like a frog.

IF, slick floor is really what I need to take care about, what kind of method I should use? Making a huge cage for him? Or any other advice? As the place I'm staying is a rented house, and he's staying at the porch. I used to tie him up when going out or to work.

I need your advice, just don't want my boy to suffer from the sickness later. Thanks!

Well, there is not method to prevent hip dysplasia once its been diagnosed in a dog. The only way to prevent it, is to breed selectively. But then again, sometimes you still don't know what you'll get.

Once you think your dog can be prone to having HD, then you need to control the factors that could make it worse. Things like slippery floors are not good for them, especially if they like jumping and "skating" on these type of floors. Other thing you can do, is to control his weight. Don't let him get overweight, cos it'll then put more stress onto his joints.

A glucosamine based nutritional supplement may possibly be suggested to give the body additional raw materials used in joint repair. Glucosamine can take 3-4 weeks to start showing its effects, since it can take up to 6 weeks to reach full therapeutic effect in the body, so the trial period for medication is usually around 3-5 weeks minimum before assuming it isn't working. It's important to remember that glucosamine is not a medication, it's a raw material, so the body still takes considerable time to build more cartilage once it has access to this raw material. Note that the efficacy of glucosamine for such conditions is uncertain; it is supported by some veterinary sources, and considered unsupported by others.

i am not sure it work for yur dog, but mine i feed on Nuriedge food, it contain glucosamine as suppliment.

Thanks!

I don't really understand that glucosamine is given to dogs WITH hip dysplasia or given to every dog that has tendency to get it?

What is the maximum and minimum dosage for this supplement? As I heard from the vet, supplements can't help much...

I've read some of the articles on the web, said that dog can be diagnosed as prone to hip dysplasia or not at his age of 2 years. US Kennel Association will need the dog to be certify when the age of 2 to allow in breeding, if not mistaken.

Is this test possible in Malaysia, Selangor? I wanted to take him for a test on this when he reach his age.

And also, since I cannot renovate the floor caused I'm only tenant but not owner, is there any way to get something like a huge floor mat or something to make it non-slippery? What is the cost of doing it?

Thanks for your advice again!
