| the answer is an easy yes... if you want the best for your dog. other than heartguard (ivermectin and pyrantel), there a new and latest drug called Proheart (moxidectin) that is a new class of drugs formulated for this cause. |

Heartguard or any other heartworm preventions are meant to keep your dogs safe from the heartworm transmitted by the mosquitoes, hence even if your dogs are living indoor they still have high chances to be infected with the worm. The consequences of heartworm infection in many case maybe fatal. |

| Shopgirl is right. In the case of heartworms, prevention is always better than cure. Its best to keep all your dogs on some heartworm prevention, unless you're 100% sure that no mosquitoes will ever bite your dog. |

hearguard (ivermectin) is recommended to be started at about 6 months of age, to coincide with blood testing for possible hearworm burden.
theres a newer product called Proheart (moxidectin) that the manufacturer claims that it can be started for puppies as young as 3 months (lesser chance of prior heartworm exposure) and then the routine blood test can be performed at 6 months of age. |
