No new poultry farms in Negri

SEREMBAN: There will be no new poultry farms in Negri Sembilan.

And those already in the business must discard the open rearing system and adopt the closed system, where the birds are housed in closed and covered facilities.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said that while new poultry farms would not be allowed to open in the state, those who want to remain in the business must go for the closed system by Dec 31.

He said the authorities would not entertain any request by the farmers to extend the deadline.

“The three-year deadline ended last December. We have since given them until the end of this year to do so.

“We cannot be bending the rules as people have been suffering due to the open farming activities,” he told newsmen here yesterday.

Asked if errant farmers would have their licences revoked, Mohamad said this would be decided once the deadline ended.

“We are taking these drastic measures as we have been having a massive problem with flies.

“People cannot be made to suffer at the expense of those who make big profits from poultry farming,” he said.

“We want our people to have a quality life and not be bothered by flies.

“The problem has reached a critical level,” he said, singling out Port Dickson, Rembau, Tampin and Seremban as places badly swarmed by flies.

“We are trying hard to promote Port Dickson as our premier tourist destination and also planning to turn the resort town into a wellness zone. We cannot afford to have flies everywhere,” he added.

Mohamad said he had also instructed the Department of Environment to ensure plantation owners did not buy raw chicken droppings as fertilisers.

“These have become breeding grounds for flies, too. If they (the plantations) want to use chicken droppings, they must ensure the droppings are buried and not left exposed on the surface of the land,” he said.

On another matter, Mohamad said the state authorities had disposed of almost 20 lorries of pigs that were recently brought in from Malacca.

What a sad things happen recently, no matter in Pigs or poultry!!! All the farmers are very pity, they are facing pressure from the feed price, goverment, controlled chicken price.... etc. When they keep on loosing money, their farm will be closed down automatically without any action taken by the goverment. When the politician say our country can import chicken from others country, their mind never think of increasing feed price is a global issues, neither of the country can avoid from that, and that's for sure, the chicken imported will be very expensive as well. I still doubt, our PM keep on encourage us to involve in the Agriculture sector, but why there still have some politician keep on create some issues to restrict the growth of this industry??
