Hi Voltex,

First of all, do you mind sharing what breed of dog do you own and would like to have guard dog training and how old is the dog? Male or Female?

Cool, well, Rotts are comparatively easier to train, somehow they tend to have slightly higher defensive drive.

There are a few facilities in Selangor that offer these services. But I strongly recommend that you, first and foremost, understand what is required from the handler, owner, dog and trainer. Then, go and watch the training that these facilities employ. Ask lots of questions before you sign up for their so called training.

If you would like to learn a lil bit more about working dogs for sports or protection. I think a group of enthusiast trains on weekend mornings 830-1030 at Pdg Merbok in PJ. They focus primarily on working dogs (GSD, Malinois, Rotts) for Schutzhund and Protection.

Hi Voltex, Padang Merbok is at the end of Jalan Gasing PJ. Coming from Assunta Hospital, it is situated between the 9 and 12 oclock junction of the last roundabout heading to NPE/Old Klang Road.

If you come from Federal Highway and turn up to Jln Gasing, it would be the field on your left at the end of Jln Gasing, that leads to the roundabout that heads to NPE/OKR (9 oclock) and Assunta Hospital (3oclock)

I hope this helps.

Where will you be coming from?

Hi Siong,

What kind of information would you like me to share? If you don't mind me asking, what dog do you have that you would like to train for guard/schutzhund work? How old is your canine?

When JKL said that, he hit the nail right on the head. U have to UNDERSTAND what is required and ask yourself if u really need a guard dog. Remember your rot and in siongs case dobe are not your average pooch on your lap. Because if one makes the wrong move, these dogs can become dangerous...not to you but others around you. Guard dog training is not just sending them to get trained but as the owner you need to be able to reinforce and refresh these guys.

For me i think obedience training is much more important. Which is not to say guard dog training is useless, but more often then not i find people who i have to deal with dont know how to handle their dogs well enough to ask their rotts to sit and stay much less restrain them when they they get aggressive. Most people i have to deal with don't even know what they are getting themselves into when they get a rott much less when they are trained to guard.

In this country if your dog bites someone, in the eyes of the law the owner is at fault, and the dog suffers in the end, not just your dog but all dogs in general...and the press will have a field day.
I am not in anyway saying that guard dog training is bad...not at all, in fact i think it is a very good experience for both dog and owner, not to mention that the crime rate is going up in this country lately and a rott that don't act like a lab would come in handy when the family is in danger. Just make sure you guys do your homework and be as prepared as you can before training your dog to be guards.

hi voltex. i believe then you noe how to get to jln gasing? well, it is at the end of jalan gasing. you shld be able to see the field if you're heading to OKR from jln gasing. i think it was where they use to compete birds and had some other dog trainings there before. the folks in pj shld know that field quite well.

I feel that almost any dog is better than no dogs at all, when you're talking about guarding your house. Once a dog feels at home, it will bark at strangers. And that is the best type of security for a house. Any barking dog will look menacing to burglars, and the burglars will think twice breaking into a house with a dog. Which looks more tempting, a house with a barking dog or a house with no dogs?

i have experienced once last year when my house got a break in, i have this 10 year old spiltz (if correct spelling) he bark but the dog very scared when he saw around 4 ppl comming in to the house compound. even the 4 dont even care about it.

until i got my rotti and this dog seldom bark even when people walk close to my house. but they scared la. by looking at the dog. :D

but i think no use without tranning, some said they will tend to eat anything they throw inside the house, this is what i am worried.

Hi Voltex,

I just found out that the dog training will not be held tmrw at pdg merbok, they have changed venue for tmrw. But should be there on Sunday. If and when you do go to pdg merbok, they encourage you to bring your dog along (on leash) for a suitability assessment e.g. not unnecessarily aggressive, calm and stable around people, not nervous, etc etc. It would be best if you have a pet crate to put your dog in as well and he is under your control at all times.

Yes, poisioning of your guard dog is a very serious and real threat. That is the main reason properly trained protection dogs include poison proofing (do not simply eat stuff of the ground or handed by other people).
