I have noticed small red patches on my cat's skin, though there is no significant hair loss. It doesnt look like ringworm to me, and he doesnt seem to have fleas or ticks. Is this something to be concerned about?

Is it a solid elevation, say like a pimple? the term you use, a 'patch' denotes a skin change in colour without a solid elevation (meaning its flat) usually due to change in melanin deposition, haemorrhage or inflammation. the smaller version (less than 1cm) of a patch is termed a macule.

It isnt elevated, though it does feel abit rough. But its flat. I found one on his rib, another on his front leg.

sometimes after a long time of irritation, the skin do get slightly thickened. it could be a normal skin reaction to a chronic problem by proliferating the skin to withstand the irritation.

nevertheless, i suggest if this problem is always at the back of your mind, perhaps it may be wise to have a vet check it out. since the area of dermatology is quite visually intensive. like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words!
