Seem that pig price already raise to acceptable level, but yet still the pig farmers cannot making any profit. But in fact they still loss because of the expensive raw material. I think they are very pity because always been "Bullied" by the middle man. We as a consumers, never able to buy a low price pork even though when the price drop to RM 3++/ 100kg. Pork price should be decided by the market demand, and not by the middle man. Few months back, I think the farmer slaughter and sell their own pig directly to the consumer are extremly right way. The consumer will directly beneficial from that.(lower price for consumer & higher price for Farmers), it's considered as an win win situation. Middel man are always the group which making a lot of trouble.

War of words between pig farmers, pork sellers

A WAR of words has erupted between the Malaysian Pork Sellers Association and the Federation of Livestock Farmers Association with the former threatening to stop selling pork for three days each week.

Sin Chew Daily reported that Federation of Livestock Farmers Association president Lee Ah Fatt had criticised Malaysian Pork Sellers Association chairman Goh Chui Lai for issuing a statement demanding that the Government stop the rising pork prices.

Recently, Goh had said the association would mobilise at least 3,000 members to stop selling pork for at least three days per week if the Government took no action to cap prices.

“He simply wants to create trouble by making such an inconsiderate remark, without taking into account the difficulties faced by pig farmers,” Lee said.

He said that almost all industries were facing higher production costs and that pig farmers were no exception.

“The price of imported fodder has increased five-fold since early this year. We are simply doing the appropriate revision to reduce our losses and are not trying to make a profit,” he said.

He said that pig farmers and pork sellers had always maintained a close relationship and that the latter should understand the difficulties faced by the farmers.

“Pork sellers have always enjoyed high profits and such threats are very unwise, when their profits drop slightly,” he said.

On another matter, Lee also urged farmers in Malacca to improve their waste management system to prevent certain quarters from continuing to protest against pig farming in the state.

> China Press reported that Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board chairman Datuk Markiman Kobiran warned taxi operators in Penang not to challenge or threaten him anymore by going on strike.

“They had better not challenge or threaten me. Once they go on strike, we will be unhappy and we will revoke their licences as it shows that they have earned enough money,” he said.

One of the operators, who refused to be named, told the daily that the enforcement unit had never communicated with them.

“Sometimes the enforcement unit will arrange meetings with us but they only want to reprimand us and not listen to our grievances,” he said.

He said it was also very unfair of the department to suspend the licences of taxi operators for not wearing uniforms, which they would have to buy for themselves.
