hi all;

I have a giant breed puppy. I visit a pets shop and they introduce a RC giant puppy dog food . But my friend advise me not to feed to my dog due to the high protein 36%. according to his explanation dog will discharge excess protein through their skin and will attract mites and cause a lot of skin problem how true is the statement ?? It doesn't make sense to me :shock:

Ask your friend if he has any scientific backup for that theory??

Large breed dogs need more protein, cos obviously they need it for their huge growth. If you limit its protein intake, then you will end up with a unhealthy, stunted dog with malnutrition problem. Excess protein is not discharged through the skin. And mites can attack any dog regardless of what they eat. In fact, a lot of skin problem comes when a dog is not at its healthiest.

I haven't heard anything as peculiar as your friend's claims before. Large breed dogs have specially formulated high protein dog food because they NEED a higher protein diet. Reputable dog food companies spend a lot on research and that is how they came to know that large breed dogs need to eat more protein compared to smaller breed dogs in order to sustain good health, especially in the first 18 months of their lives. So, what research is your friend basing his opinions on?

Very high protein diets can cause a stress on the kidneys though. That is why a lot of dietician cannot recommend the Atkin's diet.
