Zorse 'Eclyse', a zebra-horse hybrid foal is pictured in the Safari park in Holte-Stukenbrock near the western German city of Bielefeld June 27, 2007. One-year-old Eclyse was accidentally produced when her mother a zebra, was taken from her German safari park home to a ranch in Italy for a brief time. Ecylse who was born in Italy, has stripes on her head and rear, while the body and her legs are white. REUTERS/HO (GERMANY)

Cute? You mean, according to Oxford, "ugly but adorable"? hehe... really unique and yeah, cute, :D
Dr Han, how come it should be sterile? Is it because it's a hybrid? |

The horse and zebra crosses are generally called Zebroids.
The horse and Zebra have different number of chromosome. Horses have 64 chromosomes and zebras have different numbers depending on the species raning from 44 - 62. Donkeys have 62 chromosomes. the different number and length of the chromosomes being about the Haldane's effect. The zebra crosses are usually sterile but on very rare occasions they can be fertile. More commonly you get subfertile females but most males are totally sterile.
I would think that donkey zebra crosses would have a better chance of being fertile since Zebra are much closer to donkeys than true horses. If you look at a zebra's tail, mane and even gestation length, it is similar to a donkey and different from a horse. |
