I have just brought my 4 year old St Bernard bitch to Gelang Patah in Johor from the UK. She is settling well but I would be glad of a recommendation for a good veterinary practise in Johor who would be comfortable dealing with a giant breed of dog. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

hi there Penny, i am quite sure many if not all vets in Malaysia is comfortable in dealing with your dog! if you could provide the details on where you stay, i can help direct you to a vets' office nearest to you.

Thank you Dr Han for your reply........I live in Leisure Farm Resort, Gelang Patah, 81560 Johor Daral Takzim. I am glad to say that Gussie has a good nature......though is sometimes a little enthusiastic when saying hello. Her vet in the UK, luckily, did not mind a good face wash when she was examining her!

oh my, i cannot imagine gussie in the tropics, her saliva should be able to irrigate the padi fields! haha, but coming back to the topic i presume the nearest vet practice would be the one in Nusa Bestari by the name of Global Pets, call them at:

07- 5123344 or 07- 5204588.

how long have you been back in Malaysia? is gussie able to get used to the climate here?

Hi Dr Han

We have been in Malaysia 5 weeks.........and Gussie is settling suprisingly well. We took the precaution of having new air con fitted in all rooms, and admit we run the living area 24/7. (As you must have guessed Gussie lives in the house with us). But then in the UK we ran central heating all the time too.
Except for the thunder and lightening storms she is not really getting very sloppy. ( I think that the "Beethoven" film did St Bernards a slight dis-service on that front.)
As for outside in the beautiful Malaysian sunshine. Well we are out at 7.00am for 50mins - when she runs and plays fairly comfortably........then the rest of the time we let her decide........mainly she goes out for toilet and strolls back...but if the sun is not fierce she will have a short stroll around the garden.
Thank you for you information on a local vet. Her vaccines are not due until January, and I will also need to keep her anti rabies shot up to date then...so that her Pet Passport remains valid. It is fantastic that Malaysia has joined the scheme. We hope to live here for many years...but it is always good to know I can take her back to the UK if necessary. I hope I will not need to call on a vet before January, but her health is as important as ours, so it is always wise to have a contact.
Thanks Again.

hey! a danish client of ours also said that Malaysia has joined the PETS and thus doing away with the need of quarantine for animals travelling within those member of PETS.

looks like its true since you have also benifitted from the scheme. i will try to get some black and white regarding this matter, and if truly true, its the best news i have had since this year!

yes, i got it from the DEFRA website, from april 11th peninsular (only) Malaysia has been added.

PETS: Dogs, cats and ferrets
Qualifying non-European Union countries and territories
UK-resident dogs, cats and ferrets can, having travelled to any of the non-EU countries or territories shown below, can return to the UK under the Scheme. Pets that come from any of these countries can also enter the UK under PETS as long as they meet the rules. Pets can enter the UK via any other EU or non-EU listed country. Pets must not have been outside any of the EU or non-EU listed countries in the 6 calendar months before travelling to the UK.

Andorra Fiji New Caledonia
Antigua & Barbuda French Polynesia New Zealand
Argentina Grenadines Norway
Aruba Guam Russian Federation (2)
Ascension Island Hawaii St Helena
Australia Hong Kong St Kitts & Nevis
Bahrain Iceland St Pierre & Miquelon
Barbados Jamaica (1) St Vincent
Belarus Japan San Marino
Bermuda Liechtenstein Singapore
Bosnia-Herzegovina Malaysia (Peninsular) Switzerland
British Virgin Islands Mauritius Taiwan
Canada Mayotte Trinidad and Tobago
Cayman Islands Mexico United Arab Emirates
Chile Monaco USA (mainland)
Croatia Montserrat Vanuatu
Falkland Islands Netherlands Antilles Vatican
Wallis & Futuna

(1) Although Jamaica is a qualifying country under the EU Regulation, Jamaican law currently prevents the involvement of that country in PETS. PETS-prepared animals may not enter Jamaica and animals may not be prepared for PETS in Jamaica.

(2) The Russian Federation consists of 88 subjects (regions). Please note that the following Republics are NOT part of the Russian Federation; Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

The maximum number of all types of pet animals each person may bring into the EU from most non-EU listed countries is 5. This rule does not apply to animals brought from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland or the Vatican.

There is more important information about bringing pets to the UK from non-EU listed countries.

Questions and answers on listed countries
A fact sheet on PETS and non-EU listed countries is available.

but the thing is, if you read properly, its easy for dogs in the UK to go everywhere but its difficult to enter the UK again (still need 6 month quarantine!) but just make sure you do not travel 'out of bounds' within those listed.

btw, have gotten the rabies from thailand under sontrol?

Hi
I noticed that a couple of the replies still think the quaratine into the UK is six months. Well under the pet scheme, once you have your PET Scheme passport, as long as you maintain the annual rabies jab, and do not take the animal outside any of the countries within the PET scheme - you will not need to put your animal into quarantine if you take it, or return it to the UK.
I confirmed this by email with DEFRA before I bought my dog here.
Hope this helps anyone wanting to take a dog to the UK.
It may be of interest to some to know that opening the UK to Rabies free dogs from around the worls has meant that the 'show' dogs now travel in and out of the UK on a regular basis which is making the dog shows more varied. Also by bringing new breeding stock in the UK it is helping to breed healthy dogs in to the UK by reducing the 'in breeding' which was causing such health problems in a lot of the UK pedigree dogs.
