|

Hi there. I'm one of the pioneers who went to Bintulu to take up the DKHP course. I will be in my 5th semester when the semester reopens this July.
The main reason of me enrolling into DKHP is to get into DVM. I love being around animals and it has been my dream to become a Vet one day. I guess I wasn't really keen to take up Form 6 so I opted to do DKHP instead right after my SPM.
I've heard of students successfully enrolling into DVM after completing the DKHP course. There are a few questions which I am curious about and among the few are...
-What are the requirements to enroll into DVM after completing DKHP?
-Is there a limited number of students who are allowed to enroll? If yes, is it separated into different categories? eg.Dip, STPM, A-Levels...
-Are the chances of a DKHP student enrolling into DVM slightly higher compared to other exams like STPM(well...I don't mean to mention preferential treatment)
-Is it okay if I were to meet the Faculty Dean/Vice-Dean personally to express my genuine interest in taking up DVM, would my chances be higher?(I'm really, really interested)
-What are the current ratios between post-DKHP students and post-STPM, A-Levels, etc; students?
-What else can I do to make my dream come true?
I do not want to sound bias in comparing between qualifications but I really do need the info to prepare myself.
Thank you very much. |

Sadly, it is actually very hard to get into DVM from DKHP. Easiest ways to get into DVM are matrix and STPM, only that in STPM, you result got to be really good.
There used to be a allocation seat for DKHP student into DVM but they stop this years ago. Only very very special cases DKHP allowed into DVM. Like you are very very smart, very very dedicated, very very good result from DKHP, say Dean list all the time and 4.00 in some semester. Or someone pulling some strings for you.
Dedicated doesn't mean that only if you like animal then you are dedicated. Got to show it at the right time to the right people. I've seenn people volunteer in Zoo for years, everyday, doing donkey job. Volunteer in the UVH, hard work. No pay, surviving on your own saving do to the volunteer work, for people to notice you, acknowledge your dedication...
If you ask me, STPM is a easier way. |

| Try meeting up with the Dean or the vice dean in charge of acedemics. I'm not really sure, but I think they still do open up the DVM course for diploma students. Better to ask directly to the dean/vice and get your answers from the horses mouth. (and then share it here) |

Yeap remember to write a formal letter before you see the Dean. Tell them the appealing stories why you want to be a vet so badly. Show them "evidence" (like those volunteering work photos and etc) if you have one. Do remember to make an appointment first before bumping in the Dean's room. Remember to go in the morning so that the Dean is fresh and more receptive to your request.
Good luck! |

Thank you for the positive feedback. Will contact the dean very soon for more info.
I also wanted to ask, is DVM really competitive to get in? Do they have a cut off number for enrollment? |

Looks like it is getting more popular. Every year UPM takes about 60 students for the vet course. So, remember, you have to be the top 60 candidates in Malaysia to study this course. |

I've just emailed the Veterinary Faculty dean 2 days ago and he has replied.
His only advice for DKHP students is to get the best CGPA that you can get since it would be the basis of selection to gain entry into DVM.
So I guess DKHP students are still encouraged to apply for DVM after they graduate. :) |

hi! For your info, this year there are quite a few DKHP students in the first year, about 20 from the second intake. So now there are about 70 people in DVM1 this year.
But I think that the relatively large number (compared to other DVM's, the number is quite large) of DKHP students this year is also due to the fact that the students who turned up for registration on the first day was not as much as expected (which was about 55)...
Well, hope i helped:) |

The assistant registra officer from Serdang came over to Bintulu yesterday. He mentioned that Diploma students do not compete with STPM and Matriks students...and encouraged DKHP students to apply for vet.
Music to the ears? |

| Well, that's a good sign. Good luck and i hope you'll get it after all the troubles you have gone through. Going through the whole diploma course is not easy. |

GOOD NEWS
Apparently the post representative changed the consignment form which is why the records did not show my envelope. So it did reach UPM!
Woohoo!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I applied as soon as the application window for the STPM/Diploma/Setaraf opened. I filled the online UPU form, printed it out and Pos Laju'ed through a Pos Representative(Wakil Pos) it to 3 different public Unis(UPM, UKM, USM) on the 22nd of January, 2007.
But apparently, the UPM envelope mysteriously did not appear on the pos laju records. The other 2 did show up and was received by the recipient, as pointed out in the computerised records by the pos laju staff. I only discovered this last month(April). The officer said he would manually check it and would contact us.
The online UPU application did not suffer similar problems, only UPM's envelope didn't appear on the records. A call up to UPM to confirm the arrival of the envelope proved to be impossible, they said there were too many envelopes to check.
So I called up the registrar officer, and he said that one of the option was to go through the e-rayu process, which can be rather risky. The main reason i sent the envelope quickly was to avoid such problems but it was not so. I faxed them my relevant docs and he noted down my personal details and would call me later on.
I don't know but i'm really, really worried if my application doesn't get through at all. Shudders.
Anyone has been through such a problem before? Any advice or help? |

From what I hear, there will be a LARGE intake of vet student this year (maybe in the next few years too) - to fill up the gap in the shortage of vets currently. So, those that are trying, my advice is to keep trying and dont give up just yet.
Good luck |

| In Malaysia, the vet population is less than 3,000 since the independent day. I guess it's time increase the number of vets as many of the senior vets were already retired. Not enough people.. |

Based from recent speeches in almost every official activities done here, the faculty is planning to increase the next intake to 80 students and may be to 100 when the new faculty is finished. But pushing the numbers to 80 may not be a good thing, since the facilities in the current old building is best (max) for 40 students. Even my current batch (60 people) have to bear with the crowded environment and insufficient space to practice and learn for the past 5 years.
Just to give it a thought la.. |
