| My calf developed joint swelling a week after calving. The navel dried up well. i treated antibioitcs{oxytetracycline} and dexamehazone. Swelling kept increasing. There was pus coming out from the swelling.I daily squeeze out the pus and applied iodine. There is not much improvement. Please help. Now the calf is 3 weeks old. |

It sounds like your calf probably has an abscess in the umbilical vein within the peritoneal cavity. You didn't mention anything about the joints. How are the joints? All in all, it doesn't sound good but if you want to be aggressive about treatment, I would suggest going in and removing the abscess surgically, stop the dexamethasone (I don't see any indication for it from what you tell me), and keep the calf of some antibiotics I prefer Procaine penicillin G over oxytetracycline but at a different dose which I am not allowed to share in this forum. Keep in mind, only a licensed veterinarian can use drugs particularly if it is used outside the labeled dose and an increased withholding period must also be observed.
Good luck |

| By the way, how did the calf do? Did you manage to save it? |
