i've just got my SPM results, n i'd made up my mind long ago to be a vet and my sis even found me a uni at University of Queensland, which i could enter by using UEC results, doing the foundations first. and when my dad say he cudn't support me financially, i decided to study locally, at UPM. the problem is dat i heard dat government unis choose their students by ratio of races?? is it true dat even if i went for STPM n get good results i stil cant be guaranteed to study vet course at UPM? is there any difference if i studied STPM in a private or government school?? or from which state i studied STPM (i'm from sabah)?
my family members have asked me to give up being a vet but i i just want to know the best pathway to enter UPM, by STPM or matriculation or A-levels...?? and will i be guaranteed to study vet course if i get good results, will they juz give me a course randomly?
THX A LOT!!!! |

As far as I know you will stand a good chance to get into the Vet school if your STPM result is good. Please make sure you choose UPM as the first choice and DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) as the top of your preferred programme list.
I have a course mate who was from Sabah. And several from Sarawak. So I think state shouldn't be a problem.
Wish you luck! |

Why do you need to worry about the ration thing. Just study hard and be the best of the best, or at least best among your ethnic group, nobody can stop you from entering any course.
Come into vet programe with full marks and make us proud of you |

| There is no such thing as race ratio when coming into vet here. Look at our vet student population! It's all mixed! And don't worry about the states either, I'm a Melanau student from Sarawak and the only one for my batch, does it make any difference? It's your entry results (and also your co-curicular activities) that matter, not race or states. |

| I always got a feeling that so many of my coursemates are actually Sarawakian and Sabahan. It makes feel that they actually get better chance! Haha... |

| Don't worry too much about racial quota. I'd say study hard first. Earn yourself a spot in UPM's vet course. There is no easy way. Wether you get in or not, there is never a guarantee. It also depends on how many people (and their results) that apply for the course at the same time as you. And if you cant get in, there are other ways to study vet, depends on how much you really want it. |

thx for the support and advice everyone, at least there's still hope! actually i was juz hoping i really could get in as i study in a private school n only graduated at the age of 19, which is 1 year later than normal students.. i juz hope that i don't waste 1 + 1/2 years studying stpm and fail to get into this course...
may i know some examples of how u guys entered this course? eg, Alevels, STPM, Matriculation? wat's the most popular way? and frm where did u guys study the Alevels/STPM/MAtriculation?? like, which school/college, thx....
and btw, does any1 roughly know how many students get to enter this course being their first choice, and how many fail to do so??
thx thx thx!! =) |

It is entirely possible that the Sabahan and Sarawakian have better result than us in Penisular Malaysia. We see a lot of them because they are more united. They cross the South China Sea, to study all the way here. They will really appreciate each other's companion, look after each other... How often you see whole gang of KL people during orientation week and how large the groups of sarawakian and sabahan during orientation. |

Alexandria,
I entered DVM via matriculation in upm, and was one of about 10 ppl who did so but some of them were form UKM and other places. Most of my friends entered via STPM and diploma (animal health). but a few years ago I herd that DVM stoped taking ppl from Diploma. I know of one who entered via A levels...that may be a good bet for you.
Doing STPM is never a waste I think. I think doing matriculation is a waste. Yep, I am a product of that system and let me just say that overall the guys that went tru STPM and A levels and diploma basicly creamed us . It is a generalization but it is the trend. Others may disagree but thats my take. I find ppl who went tru STPM and A levels had the advantage of being slightly more mature then their matric counterparts. As one friend put it "Uni is a walk in the park compaired to the hell in form 6"....I agree. |
