S'pore Prohibits Individuals From Bringing In Poultry, Eggs From M'sia, I'sia And Thailand

SINGAPORE, Jan 5 (Bernama) -- Singapore's Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has reminded travellers not to bring in poultry and eggs from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand even if they are for personal consumption and in small amount.
Meat in all forms including "bak kwa" or barbeque meat from Malaysia and Thailand are also not allowed to be brought in, the Singapore national food safety authority said.
"When in doubt, it is advisable to declare your food items to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers. It is a good practice to declare food items brought in from overseas," the AVA said in its guidelines issued today.
Under Singapore laws, a person is required to obtain a permit from AVA before importing food into the country. AVA however, recognises that travellers both from Singapore and overseas, may wish to bring in certain food items for personal consumption when they travel.
"Therefore, travellers are exempted from a permit if they only bring in small quantities of food items meant strictly for personal consumption," it said.
Poultry and eggs as well as meat from the countries concerned do not fall under the exemption, the agency said.
The agency issued the guidelines in light of the festive season when many people would be travelling overseas and might want to bring back food items for personal consumption.
Among food products and the amount that can be brought into Singapore without a permit from AVA are a maximum of 5kg per person of beef, mutton, pork and poultry from countries like Australia, Brazil, Argentina and New Zealand and a maximum of 5kg of seafood items from any countries.
They can also bring in processed food products -- excluding meat and seafood products, fresh fruits and vegetables -- from all countries.
Those caught trying to bring in disallowed products are liable to penalties such as fines of up to S$50,000 (RM110,000), imprisonment of up to three years or both.
"A traveller may bring in larger quantities of these products if he has an import permit from AVA. Such imports must comply with the various prevailing import conditions, for example, the submission of health certificates," the agency said.
