No need for centralised farming

Saturday September 30, 2006

WITH the latest technology being used to treat pig waste in Penang, pig far- mers in the state may not need a centralised pig farming area.

Referring to Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Mi-nistry’s earlier directive that all states have their respec-tive pig farms centralised by 2008, state Local Govern-ment, Traffic Management, Information and Communi- ty Relations Committee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said Penang’s waste treatment guide- lines followed by pig farmers since 2002 had proven effective.

Under the system, pig waste was disposed off according to proper guidelines given by the state government, he said.

The farmers had also used modern methods to minimise the stench from pig waste, he said.

He said more than 98% of the pig farmers in Penang were cooperative and had followed the waste treatment guidelines

“With these measures taken, they may not need to move to a centralised farming area.

“They may only need to have some new guide- lines to improve the system instead of having their farms moved to a centralised area,” he said.

“”In fact, even Agriculture and Agro-based Industry deputy minister Datuk Mah Siew Keong has open- ly praised the pig far- mers in Penang, saying that they were doing well in waste treatment com-pared to those in other states,” he told reporters recently.

He was speaking after a press conference on St Nicholas Home’s 80th an-niversary celebrations.

Dr Teng said with the improvement in the pig waste disposal and treatment system in Penang, the state government felt it was not necessary for a centralised pig farming area.

“However, we are now waiting for further directives from the ministry on the matter,” he said.

It is heartening to note that authority in Penang is happy with the overall pig waste management in the state and no centralise farming is deem necessary for majority of the pig farmers who have managed pig waste effectively.
Hope this is not another political speech which we have been accustomed to hearing for so many years. Our pig farmers have been push around for far too long in this country.
