shall we discuss this?
actually this is what i always want my friends and senior to share with me.
this is because i like to talk to my senior but instead of doing this way ,my senior just pass me the whole stack of books and notes. and it always say: aiya, you ok 1 la.. can do soo well already"

as the matter of fact, i didn't see it notes at all. i just put it there. beside by doing this, i'll never going to cause any problem to me. this is because what i discuss here are not sensitive to someone.

errm.. where shall we begin?

I agree wit Dr csh, that EVERYTHING is important. It may seem like a lot to you now, but in reality, what they're teaching is just the basics and the bare minumum. Its only when you see practice (say, when you volunteer in UVH) that you will learn to appreciate the things you studied. Especially, when you come out working by yourself, that you realise that there is soo much more things you need to know.

Anyway, back to your basic question, relating to studying. I think there are 2 ways to study. First, to study for knowledge - so that you could use it when you come out to work. Second, to study just to ace (or pass) the exams.

Most student, in my opinion, study for the second reason. That way, no matter how hard you study, later after exams, you'll 'forget' a lot of things and find it real difficult to apply it to real cases. To study smart for this reason, all you need to do is to focus on the subjects thaught by your lecturer and then practice answering past year questions.

If you're aiming for the first reason, to study for knowledge. Then I can advice you that application is the best way to learn it. For example, if you are studying pharmacology, then volunteer yourself in UVH and question all the medications prescribed by the VOs. Then ask yourself if there's other alternative to those meds, what are the pros and cons for each, etc. You can learn all that by attending the rounds too. If you are studying parasitology, then volunteer yourself in the parasite lab and examine all the slides/cases that comes in.

i really hated statistics and was utterly gutted when i am confronted with maths each time in campus. There was the biostats, epidemiology and also in pharmacology (converting within different units).

hated them then, still hate them now. I mean how the hell do you convert w/w to mg/ml, or dL to audiquatrroA4? if ever i want to convert, i want to convert my car citroen C6!

i never agree that i student study just to do well in the exam, but in the real life for vet students, that's the true fact. no want wish to get low marks, right people?

besides taking about study smart, i'm a great practiser on that. but reacently, some subjects, the lecturers had been changed for some matter, just like what happened to me 2 days ago. the question were so such and were totally different from pass year questions.

I am a bit like kenny in that i believe i am an extream person. I say this because as Dr csh and varanus would confirm, is that i work hard on the subjects that I think is important and just try to get a minimal pass in the rest. This is not the way a vet should act however, but as a cocky student that was how i worked. I did pass, yes and i would say i am doing well as a dog and cat vet but remember next to nothing about horses or other lifestock. In other words if i was faced with Dr csh situation...i wold be SO lost.

I lieved with those two ppl i mentioned in the same house and i MUST say I have never seen Dr CSH study....only sleep. I should know, i was his room mate!. He may not have scored high in the first 3 years but both varanus and CSH were not thinkiing of test scores when they study, they insted focused on understanding the fundimentals...this paied off in the last two clinical years...they nailed it. AND they got to b good vets that UNDERSTAND the conseps and not REMEMBRER them. CSH was a good student and Varanus was a great one but what is more important in the REAL world is that these individuals are darn good in what they do as vets. U study for another 5 more years and ur life as a vet student ends. U got another 30 more years as a vet.

And Han....convert to a subaru impreza...way cooler then w/w and Mg/ml!!!!!

How to study, it is very controversial. To study for the test or for the sake of knowledge.

I guess the trend now is to study for the test and excell in the exam. Our country educational system favour this. It doesn't matter how smart you are, people want to see result. As you can see those in STPM, SPM, PMR or even UPSR. Students or in fact parents, so worship tuition. Some even 7 days a week. Most don't care about teacher in the school but pay 100% in tuition center. I can assured you that most tuition center will teach you how to score, instead of learning. They train you to do pass year, practise to write essay... I never went to tuition center because I couldn't afford one. I have to help out my parents who are hawkers, even during STPM.

In campus life, there are no tuition center. That's why a lot of top scorer losing ground in campus study. I've seen many full A student fail their subject and struggle to pass. Our beloved ex Dean once told us this, in the test, do not just vomit out what ever that is taught in the notes. For the lecturer to look through all the vomitus is very smelly and sad.

I was told by one of the renowned lecturer that there is nothing wrong for just study notes and pass year question. What is taught and highlighted in the lectures are the important ones in our situation in Malaysia, minimum requirement to be a vet. The reason so many pass year question keep on repeating themself is because they are important. The lecturer or the examiner think that at least if their poor student study for the test alone, they know the minimum. I used to criticise those who study like that but I realised the situation when the lecturer explained this to me.

But I still stick to the way I study. I study everything from page 1 of the chapter, up to molecular level. Because I am just curious to know. My dean lists are just the "by product" of the way I study. I don't concentrate on the test, normally I am one of the earlier student to leave the hall, say half way throught the exam.

what can we do? this is our country custom. i agree that is not the way to study, but my i attened tuition too haaaa...

in fact , this is only true for preclinical year student. i don't think this can be apply to the rest of the years.

besides, just curious, what type of bike you are having now?haa..

Hi Everyone,

Talking about studying... i should know... 'cos am now studying for sem finals!!! Reall boring.....cos feel guilty if don't sit down and study but feel cooped up studying alllll day! :P

Yup i agree with what has been said so far...study for knowledge not just to pass exams. Because at the end of the day, it is not only what you know, but also whether you can put your knowledge to use or not! :)

Just like sometimes, you know all the itty bitty details about...let's say...microbiology.....From the genus name, to the detailed epidemiology....but in the real world, no one is gonna ask you to spell out from A-Z about a disease or virus, but really, what is the clinical significance of the disease/agent, and how to treat and/or control it. Some things are need to know, while others are good to know. (Dr Goh always says that. I'm amazed at how much detail he can actually remember!)

I, for one, am not able to remember alll the details. I usually memorise details for exams and forget most of them when i walk out of the exam hall!!!

But i think the easiest way to learn (note: Learn Not study!) is to pay attention in class. The lecturers / clinicians are already doing half the job for you by narrowing down the amount of stuff you have to learn to the most essential! Why then, you have to work soooo hard to sift through all the information available? Besides, extra stuff you can always refer. Try to understand in the lectures so at least when you read up before exams, you already know what you are reading. Besides if you can understand and logically work out based on concepts and principles.....there will be no problem toooo dificult to handle!! That's my 'study philosophy'!

My parents always told me that University is the place where they teach you how to think! But unfortunately, for many people, thinking seems to be too much of an effort, they rather have things handed to them all nicely packaged! Plus, they are afraid to 'think' wrong. Malumah!

I always feel it's their loss!

So study hard (pass the exams! Important you know!) and study smart!
Oh and also know when to study smart and study hard!

Ok, time to hit the books for me!!!

hahaha...not actually, gonna catch up on some reading and tv!!! :P
