Yeah, i suppose Kwok has a point. Should start a new thread on hobbies and entertainment. Shan't bore people with book and movie reviews!

Admin, i wonder if this forum has 'spoiler tags'....so we can discuss about movies and stuff without spoiling it for those who haven't watched yet....

Yup,Dr D! i read Micheal Crichton books, timeline, Jurassic Park, Prey, Congo, Eaters of the Dead etc....

Very disappointed with Timeline, the movie.....i mean the book and plot were very intriguing....especially the part where he chose to stay behind! But maybe more for fantasy/medieval fans lah! :P

Did Dan Brown aleady....first book (angels and demons) was actually better than Da Vinci code.....
Movie was nothing to shout about....Tom Hanks is sooooo old! Soooo not what i imagined Robert Langdon should be..... :?

Yeah i know, David Eddings use the same characters and style for every book!!! My first eddings series was the Belgariad and Mallorean. So that was a real fun ride! Differentlah, cos usually fantasy novels not much humor....mostly just blood, gore and guts!
But the novel Belgarath was good. Sparhawk first series ( the Elenium) was good too...then became a bit repetitive.....same old same old.....
Redemption of Althalus was a condensed version of Belgariad and Mallorean but quite entertaining... i mean just a good Sunday Afternoon...Nothing Better To Do (NBTD)...readlah!

Terry Brooks was also good. But subsequent series(Isle Witch) is getting boring. Try George RR Martin? Very dark and confusing....sooooooo serious.... but can't find the last book....so am hanging! :?

George Lucas's Willow and 'i forgot the name but is continuation of Willow' was okay. Movie was really bad though....

Seen any good movies lately? Don't want to spoil it for you all if havn't watched the latest movies yet!

So drop me a line if you are interested in books and/or movies......Time to destress and talk about frivolous stuff!!! :P

I loved 13 th worrior. It is a true hacking and bashing movie. I tend to go for these type of books too. not into all those politics and court intrigues. NOt the drama type. I am in it for the blood and gore. I tryy to keep my leasure reading simple like picking up dragon lance from time to time. If i wanted to get complicated there is always Vet med and quantum physics.

My very first triology I owned was a dragon lance series (dragons of winter night, spring dawning and autumn twilight) I loved that series doe to the charactor development. Who can forget annoying Tas the kender, gruff flint the dwarf and the great strum the would b knight? I herd that the charactors were based on an AD&D game the writers and their buddies were playing in the basement of tracy hickman' home. The senarios and events were lifted directly fom the game they were plaing with pencle, paper and dice. They got a good game and made into an epic. Having said all that...why oh why do they have to butcher the stroy by introducing the 'second generation' which totaly lack depth in the charactors? I mean in every book it is always the same ban of mssfits gainst an army of vile cretures which are bent on taking over the known world. BUt if the charactors arnt strong enough in their development it will b no more then just another book. Totaly below par or what can b expected of Margret wise and tracy hickman.

In the world of forgotten realms i almost only follow R.A. Salvator. Had read Icewindale triology many, many years ago and am still hooked to drizzits, Brunor and wulfgar. What a classic.

Terry Brooks was very good at one time but it is geting rather boring and i think he went by a number of generations with his charactors (but still the same family). It can b hard to understand his story totaly if one did not start reading from the begining.

Any one ever played 'Baldur's Gate' on the PC? i never got around fininshing that game eventhough i have attempted to do so a number of times. HOw about PS2? any gamers out there too?? NOte: i am not a Gamer. I just love almost anything that got to do with fantasy. How about magic the gathering card game or war hammer? Any other weardos out there in the vet world??

BY the way i was once pritty big on photography (film not digital). I think it should still b a popular hobby among vet students.

There is a dearth of fantasy novels nowadays.....

I just went to MPH and saw the World of Warcraft Archives! 4 stories in 1. Should be good. Enjoyed Warcraft!

I tried Neverwinter Nights but never got around to finishing it! Even with the Walkthrough! Now they got subsequent installments already. But it was a good game. Didn't finish Baldur's Gate either!!!Just watched the cinematics! Hahahahahahaha!

Always the case with RPGs. Never seem to finish it! Takes too much time to crack all the secret levels and quests.

As for console games, i like those fighting games! No brainers! Tackling Tekken Ressurection now. But spoils the keypad, so can't play too often!

I never really got to choose what fantasy books to read cos i used to borrow them from the library....so whatever they had i just took! But because i didn't have to pay for them, i could try all authors!!! Good variety! And i would pick up ANY fantasy book!!! But unfortunately, most of the trilogies were not complete... Didn't really get to read R A Salvatore though...

Dragonlance series and Forgotten realms never really attracted me though, as there were just tooo many books. Not impactful either....read one or two but not the first trilogy you mentioned.

Straightforward blood, guts and gore, is why i like fantasy books, but also i prefer a bit more magic! Like Gandalf in LOTR. Adds more mystery!

How bout movies? Caught any lately?

I watched The Prestige, The Covenant and The Departed.
The Prestige was dark and disturbing but very good!
The Covenant was really bad. Not worth RM10! Just download it or something if you really want to watch.
The Departed was aptly named. Pretty good, just don't compare with Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs (which is better)!

Talking about photograpy, due to the advent of digital cameras, i see people taking more and more unnecessary photos! No limit mah, so just keep taking! No skill required just point and shoot!

Yup,i guess photography is still a popular hobby, but i think posing for photographs have became an even greater hobby and skill! All the presentations now come with TONS of photos....some are even blurred!!!

It seems like it is only you and me, Dr. D, talking about books, games, movies, hobbies etc...

Where is everyone else? :?:

Dunno la, maybe a chronic lack of life when we become vets....

NOpe no movies for many many months. GF bz in final year me also bz with work what to do?? But as i said before the kick which i got from lotr have made all movies so far pale and dull. Just not the same la...

HOi students out there, u can chat about other junk too like sports (motor racing, badminton or football) or the latest tv show (am into 'lost' and 'criminal minds'. In the middle of 'house
season 1'). It is kind of boring just 2 ppl chating about fantasy. (although given time i can go on and on about fantasy subjects).

Sorry gost, i think we got to xpand othrewise fantasy will end up being nothing more then a Dunker/Gost realm.

As a student i use to play war craft III to chill out. The beauty of the game is in the multiplayer mode. but the fact Blizzard took effort in the making of the storyline is amazing in single player mode. I did not play the single player game but watch dr csh and varanus do all the work and i follow the story line. PARASITE.

I dont normaly go to books which takes the theme from games. Stories tend to be a bit thin but i could be wrong since i havent read any warctaft stories.

What kind of library stocks fantasy books, so cool one. Hey if u want any books just tel me and i can check if me or my younger bro (even bigger fantasy nut) have it.

Unfortunately right now there isn't such tag yet.

If you want to try some fancy styling of your message how about using the "Code" tab?

Example:

Code:
This is a special text wrapped inside the code tabs
Thank you for your suggestion. If you want to suggest more features you can post the messages in the

"Feedback and Suggestions" Forum - which is so far quite underutilized.

Hey I'm cool with people chatting about other stuff.

Although i'm not 'actively' in sports...

Yup, all vet and vet student's like me, suffer from chronic lack of 'life'!

Everyone in faculty is going after Grey's Anatomy, House, Nip n Tuck (can you believe that??!!!??? ), Lost, Prison Break, Desperate Housewives and a whole host of Japanese Anime!!!! Our short form for Grey's is GA! So we just say, someone had too much GA when they come to class with panda eyes!!

Unfortunately, i don't have an external hardrive or laptop to download the series from them... but i still have national tv!!!

Just caught Kitchen Confidential yesterday! It was hilarious!!!

As for LOST, gave up on them since season 2....they are still LOST!!! I'm also pretty lost after the island became creepier and creepier! I mean, polar bears? Cannibals? Secret alien/research facility? Electricity? What next?

Was watching The Cell yesterday. The serial killer used an Albino German Shepard to lure his victims!!! poor dog! Dog misuse!!!!

Criminal Minds is pretty addictive! But still following CSI. Like NY and Vegas. Hate Miami. So Fake! :?

Went to this small, privately owned, charity library. Their books were mainly from expatriate donors. So the fantasy section was pretty well stocked! But i've went through all already.

Yups, chat about anything non-vet related here! All are welcome!

Just chill!!! 8)

This is a good topic imo. But why so litte replies? Are those vets and vet to be still alive or not?

Anyway, I've read some fantasy. Not much as they're all expensive. I used to enjor Joe Dever's Lone Wolf Adventure. Not really a novel, more of a game book where you flip the pages around.

But I've read the Lord of The Rings series, including The Hobbit. Sadly, only after I've watched the movies dozens of time. But its good to know the story the way Tolkien wrote.

I love star trek series. And not to mention Star Gate. they don't show stuff like that in TV anymore I guest. More and more crime busting, police story and reality shows nowadays. Wonder where I can get star trek and star gate series. Is it downloadable?

I'm more into computer game. I play strategy, RPG, some action and racing games. I really loves Cid Meier's Civilization series. I've played warcraft, diablo, Heroes of Might and Magic (3,4,5) etc.
Currently playing Warhammer 40K Dawn of War Dark Crusade. That would explain the Necron Lord I use as my avatar.

Recently just watch Prestige. Agreed ghost06, dark and disturbing and good. Covenant....I wish I've read your post before watching it. RM10? Not even worth RM5 imo. (spoiler) suppose to be about witches but ended up something like X-men or something.

What about World Trade Centre? imo, it sukz. (spoiler) I mean the main character just lie trap under the rubble from beginning of the story till the end.

Anyway, this topic should have more post. Just to show being vet does not mean being boring.

p/s: really would like to say.......NERD! sorry, just joking

Dude,

I aint no geek, i think the same goes for gost..but as i understand it vet students are undergoing a process called finals...i dunno if u are a vet student or not but i think finals tend to make a geek out of even the most laied back students.

The last movie i cought was tokyo drift...loved the movie. cool sexy cars with tonns of horse power and wonderful paint jobs going at break neck speed accompanied by head bashing soundtrack n no thinking involved....a real guy movie.

Ahhh..lone wolfe...the summerword saga...i hated those game books coz i spend halg the tiime fliping backwards to back track for some reason. i read the actual stories...all of em. i only read 1 or 2 game books but i owned a few ian livingstone books...sad sad..got coned.

I am not a treckie. i just dont find startreck as fun as star wars for some reason.

Hey how is dawn of war? my pc cant support the high grafic demand so all i can do is watch others play and drool. I actually have been following the minatures and have visited tha shop in amcorp mall a few times. but then every time i go there the price tags put me off. i was very interested in the LOTR range of games workshop but the scale is a bit different to the miniatures of warhammer40K-smaller hence much less detail. I love table top games or rather the consept of it cos there is interection between ppl rather then pc AI. But having said all that my friend said "why bother spining dice and moving units around when the pc can do everything for u in seconds?" :P

Hi apo-pirate, nice to see you!

Too bad, you and i also got conned by The Covenant! Had so much potential to be a good movie but...flopped miserably!

I just watched Death Note. Great Movie. Must watch of the season. The movie was fantastic! Foresee that it is gonna be a cult movie! Its only showing next thursday. Caught the sneak preview last night! The manga is already a cult favourite! Now getting the anime.

For those who don't know, Death Note is about a student who gets the Death Note that enables him to kill anybody who he writes the name in the Death Note. It is an adaptation from a japanese manga of the same name. So the movie is in Japenese but with subtitles. Don't expect it to be a horror movie, cos it is not!

I don't know who is scarier, 'L', the Death God 'Ryku' or "Light"! :D

I also played a few fantasy gamebooks, but never really liked it. Too confusing!!! Have to filp here, flip there! Then suddenly...DIE!!! Start all over again! Too much effort lah.

Dr D, I also liked Tokyo Drift. No brainers, plot was horrible, cars were cool, car chase was cooler, great track......did you know that there is always a nissan Fairlady Z parked in our faculty parking lot? Guess who it belongs to? If you know, it becomes a killjoy!!!

hahahaha, yah, finals make a nerd of anyone! Okay, i'm going back to be a nerd for a while!

Chao!

Hi. I don't read much english fiction, not a single fantasy book. Too much of pain for me to look through the dictionanry. Even Kelvin and Hobbbes I need the dictionary by my side.

Used to follow Deathnotes comic. But lost it because getting too complicated. Pening kepala.

I know who is driving the 350Z. Already have my paw prints and drool all over the car. I think that's the only car that can chase my bike in on the road. Just joking.

OOOOHHHYEAH, I know who rides the 350Z. BUt i dont drool all that much for these sports cars. Am more 4WD sedan fan ie Evo series from mitsubishi and impreza wrx series from subaru. Am a rally car fan. My fav car is the red evo in fast & furious 3 (evo VII) and the evo VI in trhe second instalmant (lime green no less!). Dream is to buy both of them the same day one day!!!

BUt with the evo...looks like the waja from the back and a bit like the wera from the front. SO spending 300K++ on a car looking a bit like 'kereta potong' may not b all that high on many ppls spending list. BUt the worst part of all...i cant really drive a stick shift!!!

Agreed there bro. And I'm a student too. Can I call you bro?

Quote: I just watched Death Note. Great Movie.
Hey you almost cause my heart to stop there. Its not out yet. I bet the cinema in the Mines will be full on 9/11 (hey 9/11.....familliar??). Luckilly I have one of my exam on the 7th and have a week break before the last paper.

Quote: I actually have been following the minatures and have visited tha shop in amcorp mall a few times.
Is that Amcorp mall in PJ? they have the Table Top? I've looking for them for ages.

Talking about table top, you guys have ever heard of Magic the Gathering. Unlike warhammer table top, they don't have miniture, just cards. I used to play it (and I still would if I can find someone who plays them. Still got my cards, I think. Let me go and check.......

Yup, i know death note has been around for years....but didn't get into japanese anime until a miracle happened! Malaysia had broadband!

Before, dial-up was soooo slow....although you didn't really realise it until you got broadband......internet was just checking email and surfing for info etc...NO FUN!

Hey Varanus, didn't know you were such a speed demon! BTW your pics look really cool. 8) Is that really you??? i didn't know vet fac had someone soooo 'kewl'! :)

Before i got into uni, when i was working after my STPM, i was invited by someone with a superbike to ride up to Genting on Sunday...i wonder... was it you???? Hahahahaha, but didn't take the opportunity...

BTW, really want to ask, you wear all those riding leathers, not hot meh?
I'm more of a fast cars person myself. More comfort, air con and all, no need to get sun n rain!!! :P

Dr D, yeah i know, lots of 'wira-lutions' or 'waja-lutions' on the road! But no matter what you can recognise an evo from a mile a way. It doesn't look sleek and like a normal sports car, but its more like the American muscle cars! I mean it is built for power and control! Reall skill lah those rally cars!
But not my type.

I prefer Mazda RX8,7, Toyota Supra, Nissan Fairlady, Honda NSX those kinds....Not really into European supercars though, won't make it on Malaysian Roads! Too low! I watched once on Top Gear, which by the way is a hilarious show on cars, the Lamborghini getting out of the garage. Just hit the pavement and cannot move! Too too too low!!!

It was hilarious the way they crashed/smashed the Kelisa!

Varanus, its ok if you don't read books, one man's meat another man's poison. But actually, reading is a great way to improve your vocabulary. I think you may be a more extroverted / active kind of person who is not satisfied to sit in the house and read a book! Maybe one day, i shuld head down to sepang to see you and your cool bike. You remind me a bit of Kesatria Baja Hitam i used to watch when i was a kid. I thought he was waaayyyyyyy coool!!!

Apo-pirate, nearly made your heart stop when i said i watched death note! That's why, don't always go Mines and watch movielah, got better cinemas that show sneak previews, midnight and sunday morning one week before opening! Only catch is booking can be a problem, you may have to go buy tickets 2 days in advance. And it is usually in small cineplex, without THX.

But advantage, you get to talk about the latest movies that no one has watched yet!!!

I cant for the life of me think why the darn mat cars want to turn thir proton into pro-lutions. If u want to show of get a real one if not make it look like what it is...a sedan for a family. I mean the subarus and evos have all wheel drive and even if u fit a wajar or a wira with an evo engin it will be still a front wheel drive car.

Having said that, the protons are woefuly out classed in terms of qualtiy of production. I dont want to sound unpatriotic but proton comes up with design that looks up todate but cant seem to even get their quality up to par...Hence i am acctually a produa fan which is under dihatsu which itself is under toyota. When i was a student i use to drive a kacil like a rally 4WD into water over bumps and tru hell of alot of dirt and graval road from JOhor (went to padang hijau for my large animal prac) to Pualu Pinang (SIn Leong Heng for avian prac)...car just did not break down....sigh now i got a kelisa and age have tot me not to drive like i am in the hurry to goto the grave. Still the point is the produas seem more tough som how...I could b wrong though.

I go to mines only to kill times, bro, not to watch movies. I prefer GSC Midvalley, even when it's usually crowded. Another good place is at the CineLeisure mall.

I didn't know someone else watch the show. Its a great show imo, featuring not only the good cars, but whats so bad about certain cars as well. I also like the 3 host, ther're funny.

The finals is almost over. Chill out, we will soon celebrate our Independece Day. ( taken from the movie lah!)
