Anything with a lot of bleeding is a cause for worry. If there is excessive diarrhoea and blood loss, especially acute blood loss, it could lead to shock and dehydration. Both condition would need urgent treatment.

Bring it to a clinic and get your dog stabilised first. And then find out what caused the bleeding in the first place.

i took my dog to the vet and he gave a syrup based drug. The contents of the drug was metronidazole benzoate ,diloxanide furoate and furazolidone. After giving the syrup which i mixed in food, his poo started to be hard and the blood in the poo was less compared to previously where the blood was more mixed with feaces(watery). Can i kindly know what could be the cause of his problem before.Thank you

Metronidazole is a medicine against anaerobic bacteria and Giardia. Furazolidone is also used to treat Giardia. Diloxanide furoate is a medicine used to treat amoeba, like Entamoeba. Even though diagnosis can sometimes be obtained by patient's response to treatment, but there are other ways in getting diagnosis like a faecal smear. Your vet may be the best person who tell you what is the most probable diagnosis.

Have you asked your vet what the probable diagnosis is, or at least what he/she suspects? Did you also ask what is the medication for? How about the plans for your dog, should the diarrhoea continue? These are all questions your vet can answer for you, and it should be a good practice for you to always ask during a consult.

Although the medications seems to be for protozoal infection and bacterial infection, these infection seldom cause any blood in the stools (seldom, not impossible). The protozoal infection could easily be confirmed by a faecal examination. Many times, these infections come in as a secondary infection, which flares up the initial problem. Therefore, even when controlling it with the medicine, you are not necessarily solving the initial problem. If you really want to know what is going on, talk to your vet.
