Quote: any good unversities in Australia? though im only 14 (hehe) my mum already tell me bout all this stuff cause i really really wanna be a vet next time. i wanna know bout australia. me and my mum chose Oklahoma, Texas uni for my US choice.

There are 4 universities in Australia that provide vet courses. Murdoch University in Perth, Melbourne University, University of Sydney, and Queensland University (if I'm not mistaken).

Another thing you have to check is if those universities are recognised here in Malaysia. And also, the system in US is different, you may have to study for about 8 years to be a vet (as compared to 5 years elsewhere).

oh ok. thanks for the info.. im still waiting on the reply whether xray-ing my dog's tummy to check how many pups are in there can cause the pups to be deformed. the seapark vet told me that but i dont trust him after he 'killed' my dog.

Hi Kwok,

Are you from UPM? If you are from UPM, you may try to approach Dr. Azhar too...

Thank you very much for your kind advice. I have visit the UPM site... :( I think I am not qualified then... ...

Maybe better if I just stick to this forum, instead of retake the SPM :D

Hey.. Never give up hope.. I didn't think I could get in cos I'm not exactly a "science" student and have neither SPM nor STPM (other courses, yes lah). But with much prayer, perseverance and support of many wonderful people, I got into UPM, finished my Diploma Kesihatan Haiwan & Peternakan (DKHP) and am now in my 2nd year of the vet program. Try volunteering with vets before deciding whether you wanna pursue the vet course. I did, and I have no regrets! :D

Sarah is one living example of a person with a never say die attitude. I am sure everyone of us, have heard how some of our friends dreams but somehow never realise it. Sarah for one, bite on to that sliver of dream like a pit bull and never giving up on it.

I knew her personally over the years. She for one, have no science background, only with diploma in account and advertising. It is more of her parents wishes. But she never gave up the dream of becoming a vet. After she grad, she volunteer in clinic for months before finally enroll in to DKHP or Diploma in Animal Science. It must have been difficult for her because she knows nothing of chemistry or biology. Most of her coursemate have that background during high school. God knows how many sleepless night studying for exam. After that, she will be worried of her results. She not only pull through but also be one of the top in her class. It is sheer hard work.

With that, she apply for veterinary degree. Now currently she is in second year. I have no doubt in her ability to pull through as well.

So she is an living example that veterinary courses in Malaysia can be enroll if one work hard enough. Don't give up. OK?

The highest qualification? It depends on what you are reffering to. A PhD would be the highest qualification but the entire PhD program centers around the canditate to specialize in a small field of research and has no relationship with the PhD holder's clinical ability or knowledge. Therefore, they are the researchers who come up with new discoveries and I'm not sure if you are looking for that type of vet.

In Malaysia, the highest clinical degree is probably the MVM (Masters of Veterinary Medicine) which is primarily a coursework based masters program either a 1 year full time or 2-3 years part time.

The term 'specialist' in the medical field should only be used on a person conferred the title by a recognized organization. I do not believe that we have a Malaysian speciality board for dogs. There are some vets who complete residency programs overseas and are conferred 'Diplomate' (different from diploma) status but I am not sure if these are recognized by the Veterinary Council of Malaysia. Besides, specialist are divided by their field of expertise e.g. internal medicine, surgery, radiology and not by species (except some large animal species speciality in europe). So be careful when you see the word specialist being used. Having said that, there is NOTHING wrong with seeing a general practitioner. They could know just as much as a specialist if that is their interest and they continue to learn about that subject. If you insist on a specialist, then perhaps UPM would be your best bet. Even then, you will not find anybody with the title 'dog specialist'.

In certain places, the professional bodies may give recognition for practitioners with expertise in one species. They can call themselves "feline practioners", etc. But I don't think they're called specialists though.

I'm now currently a DKHP student with 1 more year left in my studies. I'm planning to take up DVM after this.

What if the courses DVM and Animal Science(Sains Ternakan) are included in my application but I get the latter choice?

Is it possible for me to change courses to DVM after 1 year of studies in Animal Science provided I do very well?

Anyone with similar experiences? Please advise.
