If I'm not mistaken that is to calm down the horse. Horse get less excited or nervous when they cannot see.

I believe most people do that to prevent insects from landing on the eyes. Some horses also like to walk through bushes which may allow plant awns to become lodged on the cornea or the conjunctiva. Not all horses need a fly mask but those horses that seem to be sensitive or like to rub their face on stuff will benefit from it.

It's not just to prevent from insects and other nasty stuff from getting in, also not just for calming them down, it's also for two more reasons: 1. To prevent the horse from getting full peripheral vision (eyes on side of head) and 2. to prevent the horse from 'spooking' or terkejut. Race horses especially tend to have a high strung nature and spook very easily. When horses spook, they have a tendency to injure themselves...

Dear shyeow2,

Did you mean fly masks (as in the top picture of the paint horse with the blue fly mask) or did you mean the blinders (as in the second pictures of belgian draft pulling team)? They have different functions.

hi! you guys are right about the blinkers and fly masks. I don't know how common or uncommon it is for racehorses overseas to race with blinkers, but they are quite common in the Malaysian racing scene. Some horses seem to race better with it and some race better without it. I think it has to do with how the horse responds to running in a pack. Some horses naturally like to get ahead of everyone else and some just get distracted a long the way! some wear 'pacifiers' (dont ask me why its called that!) which are like blinkers with an extra wire mash covering the front of the eye to protect the eye from flying debris (especially if thy're not right out in front of everyone!) i'd love to post a photograph of the blinkers and pacifiers if i only knew how to upload it here!
