Just wondering why is rabbit being classified as Exotic Pets. Wouldn't it be more appropriate putting them under SMALL ANIMALS???

In our vet school, "small animals" generally referred to pets, particularly dogs and cats. So, vets treating dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. will still called themselves "small animal practitioners"... However, some pets are described as "exotic" because of their bizarre appearance and lesser popularity in the community. When some vets are dedicated in treating pets not commonly kept by many people, they may say they practice exotic pet medicine as well (and their clinic is still called a small animal clinic). Others who practice veterinary medicine and surgery in zoos, rehabilitation centers, bird parks, wetlands, etc. are no doubt exotic/wildlife medicine practitioners.

When we study in vet school, we also study other animals such as cattle, chicken, pigs, horses and goats. Therefore, cats and dogs seem like "small animals" compared to the others. "Exotic" animals are just a small category under small animals. A lot of the categories overlap. If you consider rabbits under small animals, you are not wrong.

List of exotic vet practitioners? Hard to answer...

Exotic pet medicine is somehow practised by all small animal vets, but in varying extent. Many treat rabbits, but to what extent they practise rabbit medicine? Nobody knows...

Vets dedicated themselves SOLEly to exotic pet medicine, are few... (difficult in cari makan, haha...)

When your rabbit is sick, I may refer you to Dr. A. But when you bring along your iguana to Dr. A's clinic, he may refuse to treat your iguana...

So, many times when the forum members asked where can they find vets treating their exotic pets, I can only refer them to clinics most probably will treat their pets...

May be one will find it easier to get exotic vets in government service, like wildlife department, the ministry of forestry, in zoos, animal safari, etc. But I think it's hard for these vets to provide services to general public.

At the end, we still rely on "small animal practitioners" out there to treat our exotic friends. I hope more small animal vets will start to look at this field and start to dedicate some efforts in exotic pet medicine.

I will try find out WHO treats WHAT (exotic pets) from time to time for the forum members...
