LANGKAWI: It was a historic moment at the Langkawi Underwater World (UWL) when two African penguins laid an egg each.

The eggs were discovered at 10am yesterday by the UWL management and staff.

“This is an exciting moment for Malaysia. This is the first time penguins have ever laid eggs on our soil,” UWL Sdn Bhd general manager Tanzil Md Noor said.

“I am glad our breeding programme is showing positive results. We can expect the eggs to hatch in about 40 days,'' he told a press conference yesterday.

However, no one could go near the eggs as the penguins, aged six and 12, were fiercely protective over them.

Tanzil said the penguins chased him away when he went near their burrows to take photographs at close range.

He said that of the 17 African penguins there, only seven had yet to find mates.

UWL veterinarian Dr Yusmalia Mohamad Yusof said she was having a tough time trying to measure and weigh the eggs because the penguins would not let her near.

“We cannot cause stress to the birds. We have to let them be for a while,'' she said.

She said most of the African penguins were ready to breed, but not the 19 Rockhopper penguins as they were still young. These were the two penguin species at UWL.
