Horse slaughter fight moves to Texas city

The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is stalled in Congress, but the fight over using horses for human food is heating up in Kaufman, Texas.
The Washington Times said that while the House has passed a ban on the slaughter of horses for human consumption, it will likely not be debated in the Senate until November, which makes an upcoming Kaufman trial involving the Dallas Crown horse slaughter plant key in the ongoing controversy.
At issue in the the Texas case, scheduled to begin on Jan. 29, is whether a zoning board overstepped its authority by trying to close the slaughter facility.
The company could move outside the city, but Dallas Crown's lawyer, Mark Calabria, said the company is intent on fighting the move. He contended the ongoing movement to ban the slaughter of horses in the United States will do little to eliminate the practice.
It isn't going to stop or prevent the slaughtering of horses for human consumption, he told the Times. Anyone who thinks that is quite naive. There are already plants in Canada and Mexico, South and Central America, Romania, Asia, Mongolia. |
