|
|
hi, i have a question to ask.
since last time those dogs that my mom bought for me, had died in a short period of time after their first injection (before the next injection arrive) . after that, i decided to not inject my dogs and they stay alive!!! healthy!!! :D
why doed this happens? actually this makes me feeling not trusty to those vets :? sorry to say that :(
now i have a 3 years dog, actually i wanted to bring her for injection but i was afraid that she will die again suddenly  so i still not yet bring her for injection.
can anyone tell me is that really important?where should i go for the service and how much does it usually cost?
thank you!!! :) |

vaccinations (i assume thats what u mean) are not compulsary. but it depends on where u live. in some areas u must get ur dog vaccinated before getting a licence. note that i am only talking about core vaccins not rabies and so forth. it is entirely up to u to protect ur dog. If ur dog dies after the injection, it may be due to somthing else, or ur pup may be sick and not yet showing signs or the vacc may have cause added stress to the immune system and u know the rest. The main diseases one vaccinates are Canine distemper (CDV), Canine Parvo (CPV). I will tell u what they are in a moment. Firstly, about the injection: There is a combined vacc which combines up to 7 disease in one injection (called 6 in 1 or 7 in 1). it would cost roughly RM40.00. i would not touch on all the disease u would protect using tha vaccin but just CDV and CPV. CDV is a viral disease that attacks the nerves, lung and somtimes the intestines. Half of all dogs that come in contact with the virus come down with the disease. Of those who contract the disease about half would die. the virus attacks all dogs in all age groups. Dogs that have the disease may show signs of caughing, discharge form nose and eyes and sometimes may show signs of having fits. The worst thing about the disease is that dogs can contract the disease and show signs years later. Som dr.s call them 'old dog distemper'.
The second disease is CPV. normaly seen in puppies under 1 year but may be seen in adult dogs with poor immune systems ie after giving birth or under stress. These dogs would be presented with severe vomiting and diarrhoea with blood. dogs normaly die due to pain, dehydration or shock due to the combination of both factors mantioned earlier. In the course of my working life (3years only) i have seen many cases of parvo and have lost more then half of them. the thing that get on my nerves is that I know that with a simple course of 3 injections done a month apart of each other, all these animals would be saved. Or the other side of the story is that I am not good enough thats why they died (depends on who u ask). I have seen no death due to vaccine or proven to be due to vaccination yet. Although I have seen a few vaccination allergies (which can b fatal).
Anyway no one or vet is going to say that u must vacc ur dog. But we do recomend that u do so (again, depending on who u ask some would say that vets are tring to make money). It is ur right to choose.
Hope this helps.
Note: I speak based on my exp. I do NOT speak for all vets. Some may have different and better advice. |

Wow! thats a lot of information i needed! thanks Dunker!
Vaccinations-basically after the baby dog was born, when can we took it to vet for vaccination? a month? thats what my mom told me,but she also not sure. would you like to tell me?
Another case is that, if my dogs are very very sick(vomitting and bleeding) and i have no vechicle that can bring them to any vet hospital or clinic, can i call the vet to come over my house to check on my sick dogs? i mean big size dogs. Somemore can i call vet to come to my house for my dog's health check? Normally do they provide these services? and how much does it cost averagely?
I'm pointing this out becos i found it difficult to bring the big pet out of the house and it vomit while in vechicle and mess things up.
thanks again... |

Vaccinations for puppies usually start around 6-8 weeks of age. It all depends on the schedule that y our vet has set.
Some vets do make housecalls. That means, they will go to your house and examine your dog. Some vets would provide transportation too. They would bring your dog into the clinic for treatment and back after it gets well. Of course, they would have to charge for the transportation.
What you can do, is to call up or visit a few vets and enquire about it. |

I agree. Its very disheartening to see dogs/puppies suffer and die of a disease that could have easily been prevented in the first place. |

HI there,
dr. nat is right. u can vacc about 6 to 8 weeks old. if your pet is older dont worry. its never too late. just remember not to send your dog for vaccination when your dog is sick.
As for house calls and transportation. Many vets do offer that service but u should check with your local vet. If u go to a vet and find it good then stick with that vet. If that vet practice does not cater for 24 hour emergencies, and house calls, get a number of another practice handy. this means that u will have a regular vet that sees your pets and a back up practice if somthing really bad happens. there is a thread about how to choose a vet somewhere i think. u can check it out. but eventhough u may never visit a practice which offers 24 hour emergencies and transport /house calls it is still usefull to hav their number...just in case. |

HI, thanks for all the informations! so glad doctors are answering my questions! Last time i wanted to b a vet also but after FORM 5, i changed my mind  long story...
Now only i realise not to sent dog to vaccination when the dog is sick! haha!!!
I would prefer house calls...but if my dogs are very fierce towards strangers,i think it may not work out! haha!!! i remember that last time i brought my miniature pinscher to a small pet shop near my house which also offer vet service, to have its nail cut. But the vet saying she can't cut my dog's nail because she scare my dog bite her, then i end up going home with the long nails...haha...I bring my dog to cut nails because it dont let me cut either cos last time i cut until it bleeding(black nails hard to see the blood nerves) i have no skills on that too ^_^
after that i went to pet shop near petaling street, ans ask about the cost and services provided for nail cut, i told them that my dog may bite, the man say they will have a mask over the dog's mouth to prevent from biting. Thats the service i needed! But i still not yet bring my dog for nail cut...hahaha..cos of that vomit thing in car ride...so i let it out on the road to RUN short the nails...
poor to be my pet...kekeke!!!
wat are the ways to let my dog stay quiet to cut its nails? it dont let me hold its paws also, very sensitive! touch it also like electric shock! haha!!! it take its' paw back very fast! sure it dont know how to GIVE ME its HANDS!!! tried b4 but failed  ...must b tricky when cutting its nails...tiring :? ...it also fear when i took out the nail cutter, also tried to snatch from me n hide it b4! very smart dog! 8)
i seemed to have many questions :?: , haha.
have a nice day! :D |

Actually, that is the best way. Plus, your dog gets all the exercise it needs too. Just remember not to let your dog lose, you have to walk with it on a leash (municipality regulations).

There are a few ways, here's some:
1. Behaviour modification - for example, giving it reward everytime you hold its paws. Later give it rewards when you cut nails. Basically, try to associate rewards with nail cutting (positive associations) - instead of scolding him.
2. Proper restraint - for example putting a muzzle on him and having the assistant holding it down/steady without injuring the dog. Sometimes this way may seem rough for the pet owner, but we need to think of the safety of the personnel and safety of the dog.
3. Sedation and anaesthesia - chemical restraint. Basically it involves giving it drugs to calm it down or knock it out. There are risks to it though, and you need to discuss with a VET before doing so (not discuss with groomer, ya). |

oh, groomer cant give chemical ah? icic...thanks Dr nat for that reminder...^^
i tried the 1st and i scared after cutting the nails, it will become fatty XD haha...
2nd way i also tried but my dog keep moving(attacking) those who hold it...haiz...thats the problem for no training my dog since it was small....haha...but it is the smartest dog i had because when i let it out to RUN, it will come back itself or when i shake its cage(make sound). It usually sqeeze itself out through my house gate...so i didnt wear leash on it when i let it out from cage, haha...but luckily it wont bite people(cause its just running near by in front of house gate)...but when i wanted to take it for a walk for quite a far distance(not just in front of house)normally i will leash it cause i scare it dont know how to cross the road and get knocked by car or cause car accidents, dont worry ya. This dog seemed to know me as its MAIN owner cause it only follows me around whenever my family members are with me,so sweet!
I believe that let dog running freely is also a training for them , but make sure they are not attacking people or scare people who passing by.Its a psychology method(i think so, haha) so they wont feel stress and wanted to run away from cage or act mentally sick(like mad dog). Just let them get used to it. so they know they are not locked in the cage all the time, and they will behave more steady. Am i right?
Well, its just my opinion and experience talk about dogs. ^-^ |

Usually those drugs are only sold and used by a licenced practitioner (otherwise, it is the same as a drug trafficker). Furthermore, there are many points to consider when using those drugs. It has been briefly discussed here: http://www.vet.com.my/viewtopic.php?t=1119

I agree with you that locking your dog up most of the time is not good. In fact, it can be considered as cruel in many cases. However, if you let it out of you house compound without any supervision, it is against the laws of your local municipality. Then, they have the right to catch your dog regardless of wether it is wearing a dog licence or not. And it usually is not that easy to find back a lost dog. |

If you lost your dog, here's a good place to start looking for your dogs (or even cats too):

Better bookmark that page! Or else find it under the pet 'lost and found' section |
