Award to study about orang utan
Date: 3 September 2006

HAVING spent more than 25 years at Zoo Negara as a clinical zoo and wildlife veterinarian and now an assistant director there, Dr S. Vellayan has been selected for a Fulbright Award in the United States.
He will spend three months at the College of Veterinary Medicine in Tennessee University, Knoxville, until the end of October.
”I am excited and thankful for this opportunity to study the problems encountered among captive orang utan,” he said in an email interview from the United States.
Besides carrying out research, he will also be conducting lectures as well as attending several conferences such as the American Zoo Vet Conference in Florida and the American Zoo Keepers Conference in Illinois.
He will also be based at two other zoos, which have excellent facilities for orang utan.
He plans to compare data with the zoos there and Zoo Negara to come up with good procedures for Malaysia and Indonesia.
Dr Vellayan was also a Fulbright scholar in 2001. His research then was on the breeding of elephants and rhinos in captivity.
The US Congress established the Fulbright Programme in 1946 “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchange”.
The Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) was established in 1963 to administer the Fulbright programme and to promote and foster academic exchange as a means of bringing the two peoples together. Since 1963, 688 Malaysians have travelled to the US with 374 Americans coming to Malaysia. |
